Aw, Answerman, I probably wouldn't have noticed that bear's nose if you hadn't said anything! Now it scares me a little, too...

Hmm, the column's up a little bit earlier than usual. Any particular reason for this?
While I wouldn't expect all voice actors to be perfectly nice and friendly all the time, I indeed found some of those scenarios quite shocking, especially the last point.
In any case, this was definitely one of the more interesting Hey Answerman! columns I've read so far this year.

So good Answerfan this week, although I think the general slant of the answers was to be expected. The second letter made the best overall point I feel.
The only letter I even had the smallest issue with was the first letter. This issue arises merely from the fact that while tv series examples were given for anime only movie example were given for American media. I don't think you can normally expect the same sort of slow story telling and gradual character development in an hour and a half or so movie as you can from a 26+ episode tv series.

I saw this title and thought you were talking about the overpriced rims on rappers cars.
Thank God its not.
As for dubs being off releases- i'm not a big fan. I loved Super Gals Season1 but I haven't brought myself to get Season 2 due to the lack of a dub. Had there been one I probably would have gotten it as soon as it came out.
Fan question- my take:
If you had people who were in love with you, pictured you having sex with your partners, and asking you a billion questions and wanting to touch you you'd be rude too.
What the hell is up with the chick? You offend someone Zac?
Cute tree animal. I like it.
Ill answer the answerfans later.

dub actors trying to get some at an anime con thats just so funny i mean is there really that much too choose from at an anime con
but i guess its not downright awful if they are both consenting adults
until u try to sleep with someone who dressed up as your character thats a bit weird but i guess thats their idea of a compliment

Second week in a row you've taken a cheap shot at Nanoha, Zac... come on, man. There's plenty of craptastic moeblob out there to poke at. Lay off the good ones.
That said, 0_o about voice actor B, A, and S... and Y's a douche.

I wonder how much cash I would rank in if I did a tape of Voice actors gone wild....hmmmm?
I actually don't mind it when companies do sub only releases. Sometimes its cheaper as well, like Super GALS season 2.
I never heard of a tree kangaroo until today. I want one now.

Here's an example of a fake flake. I'm pretty good at spotting the fakers.

I get a lot of these, actually, and honestly, they're just not very clever. |
I was wondering about that too, since I was thinking to myself that there couldn't be that many flakes..
Oh and did Answerman post this flake just because he was scared that he might actually be raped with a knife?
That's a tree kangaroo? Looks more like a dog on a tree to me.

I love a dub that's good. Long live the dub. Honestly, I prefer subbed dubs over subs.

I guess I don't mind too much when they release a sub only title. If it's a choice between sub only and not getting the title on DVD in R1 at all, then I'll take the sub only version. As long as the trend is only on titles that would not be expected to be able to recoup the dub costs, then I think it's probably a good thing even if you are a dub fan. As an anime fan, wouldn't you rather get no dub than no R1 release at all?
I always do at least try the dubs on the DVDs I buy, and have enjoyed some of them even more than the original version, but I'll generally switch back to Japanese if I don't like them. If R1 anime companies are going to start going to poorer quality actors to save money just so they can slap a dub on the DVD I don't really see it as a good thing. Just save the money and put out the DVD sub only instead.
Actually, it's great that we can even have this discussion. Back in the VHS days if you wanted to watch anime (or any other foreign film for that matter) you had to choose either sub only or dub only. No chance at all of both on the same release.

I agree with Splitter. Nanoha is a perfectly alright series (well, the second half and all of A's anyways). There is no cute fairy #4 or anything like that (well, besides a cute evil magical tome). It's called giving a show a chance before making a judgement because it could be considered 'moe'. It's no better than the people who discriminate against anime.
That said, good article. I've had the pleasure of talking with Greg Ayers at a small con in my city and he was one of the nicest people I've met.

My letter didn't make it, so I just wanted to summarize my thoughts. I think both Hollywood and anime have their flaws, but I think what I find appealing about anime is that it emphasizes characterization and accessible situations over concepts, which is what our film industry suffers from, even at the indie level. Oftentimes, you get treated like an idiot who can't get even the most basic situation, unless they pound it into your head. Or you get the opposite circumstance where they try to be vague about what the f*ck is going on, so that you don't even know what happened next, because they consider that to be "artsy".
Plus the medium lends itself to different types of shows which go beyond the sitcom/reality format we get stuck with in the States. If you like a show with marginal appeal in Japan, they don't screw it over with a crappy time-slot and/or weak advertising. Nor do they go the Sci Fi Channel route, and make their genre series look like someone slapped together some cardboard and tin for the suits. And you don't have to pay some of the insane cable fees common with HBO to catch it.
If there is one thing I prefer about Hollywood, though, it's that you're not obligated to see spin-offs of their franchises, because they're usually a different story, and not just the same story with a different character as the lead. I also like that they'll break up a monotonous formula at the risk of jumping the shark. The Japanese will probably milk whatever works long past its expiration date. Plus we don't always insert crappy singers into productions in order to sell more records.
