I'm just curious if anyone knows if cds are valuable as time goes on. Do they get to be worth something like certain older dvds do (I mean, people sell some sealed or older in good shape dvds for big$$$!). I probably wouldn't ever want to sell any cds of mine, I just wonder if they ever might be worth more than what I payed for them. I'm especially interested if first pressing or sealed cds might be worth more. I have a few. Like I said, I probably wouldn't be interested in selling, but I'm just curious from a collector's point of view. American cds don't really acquire any value that I know of, but I don't really know since I don't have any or listen to any. Anybody have any idea

It depends on the general popularity of the CD, as well as the condition it's in. The first press Eva soundtrack CDs (they come in cardboard slipcases) go for a good deal on eBay if they're new (maybe $50 a piece) but if they're used, they'd be about the same as if you had bought them originally (about $25-30).
I know a lot more about video game soundtracks than anime ones, though; since they're related, I'll mention this here. Limited editions can go for a good deal more. The Final Fantasy VII OST LE sells for about $200 now, if it's sealed. On the other hand, the initial print of something that's less popular, or more obscure, doesn't appreciate as much, or sometimes even at all. I got a first run copy (used) of the Romancing SaGa OSV, for about $20. I've got 2 sealed copies of the FFXII OST that I'm sitting on until the value appreciates a good deal. Since it's Final Fantasy, I'm expecting that it will go up in value significantly.

If you're talking about anime-related CDs I have no idea. But I used to collect a lot of noise and industrial cds in the 90s and I have quite a few that sometimes sell for about 2 to 3 or 4 times the original price on auction/used-CD sites. Most of these were released in limited editions and are currently out of print. LPs still seem to be more collectable.

In terms of Japanese music, I would say that first press CDs only make a difference if you saved the merchandise that they come with. The only reason I've ever bought a first press CD was to get posters or cards. Not because it was a first press.

To be absolutely clear, I am specifically talking about Japanese music and mostly anime soundtracks. One thing I've seen a lot is the first press printing with the slip cover over it. I have all the death note first press soundtracks and they are like that. I wonder if cds with the first press slip cover appreciate much, or just if they have something more interestin with them.

I don't know if first press CDs have higher resale value or not. But they generally do come with interesting extras (I haven't imported any anime related first press CDs so far though): DVDs and extra booklets seem to be standard fare for extras that come with the first press CDs I've purchased. I know I picked up a Kaela Kimura CD for $20 at my local Book-Off while I left the first press with DVD version on the shelf along with its $60(sic) price tag (it may have been $40). That's the only example I've come across where the first press version was available and sold for an exorbitantly higher price.

Another reason why I have so many CDs that are in new condition with the shrinkwrap still on them. Really their value is relative, and you can never tell which ones will become valuable. I don't see why any CD or DVD would go up in value specifically for being opened, but some become very rare and collectible regardless of their condition just because they are so hard to find. I think the best way to assess the value of something is how much would you be willing sell them for, especially import CDs? I have a Urusei Yatsura CD that is so incredibly rare (probably 1 of only 5 to exist anywhere in North America), although has bad scratches, if it were in mint condition I'd value it at $2,000 - $3,000. Then again it has sentimental value being my first import anime CD soundtrack and bought it at my very first anime convention.

As a music fanatic, the very idea that there are people buying CDs and not opening them is even more saddening/sickening to me than people buying comic books and not reading them or action figures and never opening them. Music is made to be listened to!

At least they're being bought and the industry is being supported.
