My anime store rents a bunch of Korean romantic comedies that are available as legit imports with english subs, as well as Japanese live-action films (from Yojimbo to Shall We Dance?) I know it's hitting a pre-sold market there, but if anime continues to make inroads, along with Hong Kong actioners, maybe a market for diverse Asian live-action product will be a viable market.

There is a public TV channel broadcasting ot of Philly that plays a Korean drama late at night. - http://www.wybe.org/
I have the first episodes of Wedding Planner and GTO, that I haven't watched, on my hard drive...and some Sentai. But I also watch as much L-A Japanese/Asian/Forign films I can. I have been getting a lot from my local Library, to many to name. I try not to categorize Anime and Live-Action Japanese movies differently. I put them in the Japanese catagory, all one thing. |

It might be interesting to see some live action versions of anime. I'm not exactly informed on the drama aspect of Japanese TV, but there isn't a lot of publicity about that sort of stuff in North America. I wouldn't mind checking out a few video reviews of live action stuff.
Although there is one live action title that I would buy without hesitation if it were released on this side of the ocean, Boogiepop and Others. I just loved the anime Boogiepop Phantom that much. |

I know at least two dozen people in my hall who have either an R2 or a boot of Battle Royale. People love that movie. It would sell well, if someone had the guts to get it here.
That and GTO has a good base and it will expand due to the Showtime appearances, perfect for a subbing of GTO to be released. |

Oh, I forgot to mention. The Ring TV show. that might get some saes in the US, even the the popularity has gone down.

I think J-dramas could do well in America, especially the romantic comedy genre. We've been showing subbed J-dramas (taped from the international channel by friends in California) at our local anime club for almost a year now, and people are making sure to arrive early in order to catch the full episode. (We show them at the beginning, as something to have on during set-up before the actual schedule starts.) So far, THE PERFECT BRIDE and MARRIED AT 20 have been big hits, and many of the regulars are now very interested in finding more J-dramas. The girls enjoy the romance and cute guys, and the guys enjoy the anime-like comedy situations and the cute girls. Everyone wins!
 (Of course, we show a lot of Asian films at our club too, Hong Kong movies, J-movies, Korean movies- and we regularly show other live-action shows like sentai and tokusatsu shows, so our group may just be used to seeing actual people on the screen! ^_~ )
I think J-dramas with an anime tie-in could also perform well, such as GTO, and the very old school MAISON IKKOKU live-action drama. When fans like a show, they generally want all versions, including the manga and anime versions- so it stands to reason they'd like the dramas as well. I for one hope they come out with commercial releases- I know I'd buy them! --Elin |

Back in the day (here in Seattle) channel 22 used to play Japanese Dramas every Saturday or Sunday morning. I always would wake up and watch them. My favorite was The 101st Marriage Proposal, with the oppening song Say Yes by Chage and Aska. If I could find that show on DVD I would buy it in a heartbeat.
The International channel plays some of these programs, too, but I don't know the schedule. |
