I really sat down and took it in a few minutes ago. It's just amazing. However, the piano section that comprises the whole middle section is really f'ing terrible and just about kills the whole thing. I know that guy's a great keyboardist, and I can dig piano music and progressive instrumental passages, but s*it man, he was just literally banging on the damn thing.

...... *whew* anyway, it's such a great song, but really, that part could've been shortened or edited out completely.

This is also my favorite X-Japan song. I'm also not very fond of Yoshiki's piano solo, since it degenerates into random pounding, although I love the harpsichord solo with the strings in the background. The first track on jealously works a bit better for me since he only pounds on the piano for a few seconds and it contrasts the first part of the song well. If you like the symphonic stuff on Art of Life I highly recommend the 2 disc Eternal Melody with Sir George Martin and Yoshiki.

Art of Life is one of the three 20 minute epics that I would like to listen to (the others would be Genesis’ Supper’s Ready and Rush’s 2112). It seams that only prog or prog related bands do song that are longer then 10 or 20 minutes. I won’t know this until I listen to it but of good is this song compared to other 20 minute epics I’ve heard (mainly Pink Floyd’s Echoes and Jethro Tull’s Thick as a Brick).

Dream Theater- Octvarium
Dream Theater-A Change of Seasons
Symphony X- Divine Wings of Tragedy
Symphony X- The Odyssey
Opeth-Black Rose Immortal
Green Carnation- Light of Day, Day of Darkness
Edge of Sanity- Crimson
Iced Earth- Dante's Inferno

All those songs run well over 10 minutes. The DT songs and the SymX songs are over 20, as well as the Opeth one. The GC song is 60 minutes, is all one track, and is literally the whole album. Crimson is about 45 minutes and again, is the whole album, and the IE song is a measily 16.26. I know plenty more, but those are among the very best.

I think this is simply because these bands are not planning on having these songs on the radio. I did have the luck of attending a concert where Rush played 2112 (the song, not the album) in it's entirety many years ago. I've also went to the Change of Seasons (back when Derek was on Keyboards) and last year's Octavarium concerts where they played the entire songs.

Although not as long I also like the X-Japan's epic Rose of Pain. They really are the only progressive rock band from Japan that I like.
