I checked the weekly update at the iTunes Music Store and saw their new "iTunes exclusive" promo, iTunes Foreign Exchange. In a nutshell, each 'episode' features an American band and a foreign counterpart doing covers of each other's songs, leading to a four track EP from iTunes (the American original, the foreign original, the American cover of the foreign, and the foreign cover of the American). The premier has +44 (Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker's new band) playing German band Wir sin Helden's ("We are Heroes" in German) "Guten Tag," and Wir sin Helden covering +44's "When Your Heart Stops Beating".
While I do like the tracks, what got me excited was the prospect of this program expanding to eventually have a J-Pop/J-Rock act partner with an American act. I know for the longest time I fantasized that The Pillows would do a cover of Green Day's "American Idiot" [the track, not the album], and now that may come true through iTunes. Now's where you come in: A) What's your thoughts on the whole idea of "iTunes Foreign Exchange," and 2) Should iTunes 'foreign exchange' a J-Pop/J-Rock act, who whould the two parties be, and, for extra credit, what tracks would be traded? |

I think it would be interesting to see an American band attempt to play foreign music such as J-Rock. I think it would bring in more culture in the music industries and inspire others to get more into music as what BECK did. I was amazed to see how many people got so into music and how many people started to take up guitar. Like if you go to youTube and look for cover songs of Moon on the Water, you'll find a lot.
I think iTunes should do 'foreign exchange' a J-Pop/J-Rock act. I would like to see Asian Kung-fu Generation do a cover of It Ends Tonight by The All-American Rejects and see them try to do a cover of Haruka Kanata. or UVERworld try to do a cover of I Write Sins Not Tragedies by Panic! at the Disco and see them try Rush. |

My other dream "Foreign Exchange" was Asian Kung-Fu Generation playing "Times Like These" and Foo Fighters playing "Rewrite." I always saw Dave Grohl screaming "ERAAAAAASE AND REWRIIIIIITE" when I heard the chorus to that Fullmetal Alchemist theme.
Then again, if you want to switch up the pace/tone of the tracks, AKFG could play "Learn to Fly," if only because that is my favorite music video of all time. |

For the past 2 days since you wrote that, I've been thinking about it and nearly swooning. Dave Grohl's fantastic scream for "Erase and rewrite!" would be damn near heavenly for me. I can almost hear it as I try to imagine the sound, and my my it sounds good. However, I think I'd rather hear Asian Kung-Fu Generation do something more like "Breakout" than "Times Like These." That might have a lot to do with being very possessive of "Times Like These" and not wanting to hear anyone else do it though. (Oh, and the "Learn to Fly" video is one of my absolute favorite videos as well, possibly even my favorite but I'm not quite certain.) The exchange idea in general is absolutely fantastic. I'd love to see them go further with the idea too. Beyond Japan, I'd love to see Madonna cover something from Mylene Farmer (aka 'the French Madonna'). But I digress. Sticking with J-pop/J-rock, I think I'd like to hear a few different possibilies. Arai Akino tackling Sarah McLachlan's "Angel" would just be beautiful, and I'd love to her her spin on something like "Kireina Kanjou." They both have such beautiful voices, and I think it would be interesting to hear a slightly deeper version of the Noir ending. While I'm having a hard time deciding on the reverse, as an 80s fan I'd love to hear Bon Jovi's take on "Hit in the USA" by Beat Crusaders. With their recent transitions in music type (not to mention an upcoming album coming out on the Mecury Nashville label), I think they could do a fun take of the song. Plus, Jon's big grin is perfect for such a peppy song. I'm not sure what I'd want to hear Beat Crusaders do though. I've only heard "Hit in the USA" thus far, so I don't know their typical sound all that well. Then again, hearing them sing "Captain Crash and the Beauty Queen from Mars" might be quite entertaining. |

Allister, a recently defunct pop-punk band from Chicago released a Japanese only EP called Guilty Pleasureslast year. Half the songs were covers of Japanese songs.

Dir en grey should cover Slipknot's "Left Behind," and Slipknot should do D.E.G.'s "Agitated Screams of Maggots." Both Corey Taylor and Kyo have the vocal and screaming capabilities to accomplish each other's songs. (Plus Corey & Kyo hung out together when Corey's Stone Sour and D.E.G. toured together for the Family Values tour.)
But hopefully soon more J-POP/J-ROCK will appear on iTunes; but iTunes has a lot of catching up to do if it wants to compete with JapanFiles. |
