Though light novels aren't manga, I'm assuming this is the appropriate place for me to ask this question. For the most part manga has always come before the anime. There are many anime that don't have manga counter-parts, some of which having the manga coming after the anime. But recently with anime like The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, the anime is being based off of light novels. My question is, what exactly defines a light novel. As a aspiring writer it can really benefit my focus because even though I plan to make my stories considerably long similar to that of an anime or manga. I'm not sure if they'd end up as novels or light novels. That said, it's not that I'm going ot aim to make my stories shorter or anything of the sort no matter hat kind of novel pr book it is. It's going to be fully detailed. The question is simply a gateay to gaining knowledge.

As far as I can tell, its mainly an issue of length. With a regular novel, you would tend to get lengthier books. More than that though, I think its a classification in Japan, separating it from novels and other books. I'm not 100% sure on that though. Basically, if you are planning to be a writer... don't concern yourself with whether you are writing a novel or a 'light novel.' Just write your story as best you can. |

Here's the definition more or less. Like the name suggests they're geared towards teens or younger adults. Andrew Cunningham is a professional translator on these boards who seems to specialize in light novels, so maybe he can provide a more in-depth analysis.

According to Wikipedia, everyone's favourite source for everything, a light novel is "a novel with anime or manga style illustrations, primarily targeting teens and young adults." So the term is not a reflection of the length, but of the fact that it has illustrations.

Somehow, I forgot about the illustrations. But they also do tend to run about 200 pages and not particularly text heavy pages either. Novels tend to run 300+ pages and with more text per page. This is my experience and observations, at least.

It's not uncommon for a novel to run less than that, though certainly 300 pages would be the norm. There is of course the term "novella" for shorter works, but the line between novel and novella isn't clearcut. |
