Now I'm not exactly sure about the title I used for this thread but regardless I have what I think is a rather interesting question for all of you.

All of us here (I'm assuming) are fans of music featured in anime whether it be the openings and endings or simply insert songs composed by those like Michiru Oshima and such. Here's the circumstances surrounding my question. We all watch anime but many of us miss out on certain anime for various reasons. Of course no one can view all the anime in the world, that'd be insane but a lot of well known titles are more or less only known by name. For instance, I'm an anime fan living in Canada and if you live in Canada you'd know that we miss out on quite a lot despite the growth of anime on television.

So what does this have to do with my question? Well I've noticed that there are just some songs that may not take the same affect as if you'd heard it in an anime or associated with one. I know it happens often and it's something you can't really escape from, hearing "Ready Steady Go" can only remind you of Fullmetal Alchemist. However what if you were one of those people who didn't see Fullmetal Alchemist? Would you still enjoy it as much as another who's seen FMA would? Or better yet can you enjoy it at all? Now "Ready Steady Go" isn't the best of choices since most everyone I know who's heard it likes it but do you think that not seeing the anime its featured in can somewhat detract the enjoyment of the song?

I really like "Aozora no Namida" (though I didn't for awhile) by Hitomi Takahashi and yet I've never seen Blood+. I'm not saying all songs but do you think to an extent that the viewing of anime where a song is featured, you have a more likely chance of enjoying that song moreso than if you heard it without viewing the anime? Just think about it, some songs are prefered over others because of that image from the anime or because the lyrics and music blends well with the anime's current plot or in general.

I think that to an extent this may be limiting to some songs being enjoyed by those unable to view that anime.

I threw numerous question marks above but the main one is, Do you think not viewing of an anime a song is featured in can limit the enjoyment of that song? (not in all cases of course)

I don't always try to associate anime with theme/insert songs. I can think of more than one example where I absolutely loved the OP/ED themes but the the anime was complete crap (case in point, Mouse). Because of this, I don't like to always associate them...

Not necessarily, but I think it can. My sister actually loves the theme song to Air, but refuses to watch the anime as she feels it will ruin the song (she hates moe/cute anime). Of course, since she won't watch it I guess I'll never know if it's limiting her enjoyment, but she already enjoys it a lot in the first place. I can say that I myself don't think I'd enjoy "Tori no Uta" half as much if I never bothered watching the series. Whenever I hear the song it always reminds me of Air (which I love btw).

Well I think that the song "READY STEADY GO" by L'Arc~en~Ciel is more enjoyable if it's featured in the anime. I always picture Ed and Al running across the world for The Philosopher's stone and during the last few seconds of the song I see Ed grasping for what he's reaching for.

I too really liked "Aozora no Namida" and was able to see it before it was featured in Blood+. I heard it on a Japanese radio station and liked it right away. I looked more into it and watched the PV on youTube and found out it was the op for Blood+. Long story short, I watched the series and enjoyed it. I really liked how Hitomi's voice matches up with the instruments, especially with the drums. Mainly during the part where she sings "Furishikiru aozora no namida, Itsu no hika egao ni kaeru yo" and the drums beats every eighth note(I think).

Another one I have in mind is probably "Ignited" by T.M. Revolution, which was featured in MS: Gundam Seed Destiny. Then I became a fan of his after listening to his other song, in MS: Gundam Seed , "Invoke." I really enjoyed listening to it back then. Another from the series was "Pride" by High and Mighty Color, this was my first time hearing them. I really liked the fast tempo with all the guitar riffs with the combination of the female's voice with the other male singer (Forgot their names. Yes, I'm really bad...I know).

So my decision is that the viewing of an anime featuring a song does not limit the enjoyment of that song. But then again there's just one factor, since the OP and ED time is limited it does cause some what less enjoyment than hearing the full version.

I'm not sure if I got this right but I decided to watch Loveless because I heard the opening song "Tsuki no Curse" somewhere and I really liked it. When I heard it first from watching Loveless, I was able to like it more cause I was able to relate the lyrics of the song to the relationship of Soubi and Ritsuka in the anime.

The associated anime has little to do with whether I like the song or not. For instance- I hate hate HATE Treat or Goblins, even though I like Megumi, and I love abenobashi. I hate the last ending to FMA, even though I love the series. I despised Samurai Deeper Kyo, though Like the opening song. Plus I got plenty of music to anime I've never even seen before that I enjoy as well. And despite what you may think, just because I like the song doesnt mean I'll rush out and watch the anime.

Full_Metal1923 this is part of the idea I had when I posted a similar (but more long-winded) thread a little while ago. I totally agree with you. I've found I definitely tend to like songs more when I've seen them in anime, so I think you can definitely enjoy a song more when you have anime images to go with it. This is not to say anime songs are automatically better all the time. If I hate a song seen in an anime I will always hate it. Nonetheless, I think it's an innate, unavoidable psychological thing to like or appreciate songs more when you have images to go with them. Here's a somewhat bad example. You know how they taught you umpteen years ago to learn to spell words? To me anyway, they said say the word out loud, picture it in your head, and write it. That way you involve as many senses as possible and experience the thing in as many ways as possible. Anime songs automatically become the same sort of multi-sensory experience. At the very least, I guess, we remember them better.

I agree however I'm not only refering to the imagery. The lyrics (if you find them I guess) or mood of the song may be better understood if you watch the anime itself. Many who prefer "Rewrite" over "Ready Steady Go" with the FMA openings often say it's because it makes a better fit not only in the image (this is obviously arguable - wait is that a word...) but also in the lyrics because they reflect the anime's current set of events or overall story in some way. In a sense it adds a layer to the song thus possibly making it more enjoyable.

I agree with you there too. You can appreciate songs more when you fit the meaning of the lyrics in with the show. They have a more special meaning.

I don't think having seen the song in the actual anime should affect one's liking for it at all... unless it's just not their taste.

For example, I myself, have not watched FMA, yet I LOVE the song "Ready Steady Go", as well as "Melissa", and "Indelible Sin".
Another example for myself is I love the song "Farewell Song" from Air... yet I have never watched Air. I also love the song "Goovin' Magic", and I have never watched Gunbuster 2. And I could keep going on forever.... but yeah... I don't think having watched the anime should affect it at all.

I agree as well. When watching an anime's opening... if you read the subtitled lyrics, they (most of the time) match the animation that's going on... and you don't think it's just a random bunch of cool images.

Hmm, not necesarily IMO. I have Gonzo's Reunion collection, which comprises of the OP & ED themes from 26 of their shows, spanning over 3 CDs (full versions, not the TV edits - yay!). I've seen less than a third of the series listed, yet I like the large majority of the songs.

I have similar feelings for the OP/ED themes to Avenger. The anime itself was bollocks, but the songs by ALI PROJECT are great, very weird & very catchy.

For me, it all depends on the song. I bought most of the GitS: SAC soundtracks before I watched any of the anime just because the music was outstanding, and the same goes for Earth Girl Arjuna and FLCL. I found that, now that I've watched the anime I have a new appreciation for some of the songs; for example, I used to skip the song Go DA DA on the second GitS: SAC OST because it's so strange, but now that I've seen the series I'll listen to it sometimes because it brings back memories of Gouda and his creepyness (although why I'd want to remember that, I'll never figure out).

Still, I have several songs that I enjoy quite a bit from anime that I have never seen and don't really plan on seeing. For example, Only One, a character song from Digimon; I will probably never watch that anime, but I worship Paku Romi, so of course I have the song. Then there's Gessekai from Night Walker. Once again, I've never seen the anime, but this song is #6 (I think) on my most played chart because it's a beautiful song. Will I like it more if I watch the anime? I don't know. Probably not.

And for the record, I liked Ready Steady Go before I ever watched FMA :p (Although I greatly prefer Lost Heaven and Rewrite!) Oddly enough, watching FMA made me dislike Melissa even more.

Intriguing, the concept worked in reverse for you in terms of "Melissa. And I also really like "Lost Heaven" and though I enjoy "Link" more I find myself listening to "Lost Heaven" more.

I actually find that the reverse works for me. I like a song, and because I like the song I go and check out the anime.

For example the song "Kouga Ninpocho" by Onmyoza was featured as the opening song of the anime Basilisk. I was a fan of the song before I'd even heard of the anime, and because I liked the song I went and checked out the anime. Didn't particularly like it, but nevertheless it was interesting.

Another example of a song from an anime that I actually didn't realize was an anime song for a long time was Kasumi Yuku Sora Se ni Shite by Janne Da Arc. Also I knew Shining Ray, by the same band, was used in One Piece, but I didn't really jump to that anime because I knew a little more about it, and actually did think it would ruin the song a bit if I watched it.
