Ms. McGlynn is best known for directing Naruto, Cowboy Bebop and Wolf's Rain.

Well, while she certainly did that, I'm not sure that's what she's "best known for." She's had a few voice acting jobs, too, if I remember. I want to say she had a small role in the Ghost in the Shell series. I think she played a Tachikoma... >.>

Seriously, she's great voice actress, and anyone who can lay claim to having been involved in the voice direction of Cowboy Bebop (one of the best dubs ever) deserves whatever accolades they get.

A worthy "Guest of Honor" at any event.

Sorry, but I don't even recognize that name and I've been watching all three of those anime. And I'm sorry that AX announced their first GoH this year as someone who isn't high caliber regardless of the popularity of the series they were involved in. I hate to say this, but that's just lame. Confused

Well it's a little hard to top last years guest of honors' with Clamp being the big money ticket. But that said Mary certainly has a body of work that lots of people seem to enjoy, so ya can't complain too much about that.

I'd argue that Ms. McGlynn is best-known to American fans as the voice of Major Kusanagi in all of the Ghost in the Shell properties, although she has done staff and voice work in numerous other series.

Thank you LydiaDianne for the post ahead of time. I took the liberty to look up this person and she has been quite an active member within the community, at least I see that we're making progress towards AX.

That's awesome she's the guest of honor! I've always been a fan of her work (before she was the illustrious Major, back in the days of .hack//sign) so it's great she's getting this type of publicity. Good for her Very Happy

I have to partly agree with this sentiment. Ms. McGlynn is an accomplished professional and will no doubt make a great guest of the convention, but for being the first guest announcement, and being that the con is only 3 months away, this announcement is "uninspiring". I'm not saying they need to top CLAMP, but when you're this close to the con and the first big guest announcement consists of only 1 person who isn't an exclusive... well, that's just not that impressive IMO.

That is not intended to take anything away from Ms. McGlynn, her work is very good (award winning?) and as I said, I'm sure she will be a great guest. But this announcement does not make me more likely to attend Anime Expo.

All I can say is that Ms. McGlynn needs to bring bodyguards with her to protect herself from the wrath of Narutards.

Wrong, she wasn't in the dub of the first movie. Richard "Batou" Epcar, though, is the only to be in all the GIST animations.

Very Happy; I find it kinda odd that I see so many comments about Ghost in the Shell but the first thing that comes to my mind when I see Mary Elizabeth McGlynn's name is Silent Hill because she's the one who has sang songs for 3, 4, and the next upcoming game. Ah well hopefully I'm not the only one.

I wish I could go to Anime Expo thusly, but I know there's no way. Crying or Very sad Maybe she'll get invited to something I can actually make it to someday, that'd be awesome to meet her.

Someone who isn't "high calibre"?!?!?!? Ms. McGlynn has done some of the best work out there from script writing and editing to directing to voice-overs. She has been in the industry for almost 20 years. She has the experience and the talent to show up any critic with class and grace. Most everyone knows her for playing Major Kusanagi in GiTS or singing (beautifully, I might add!) on the Silent Hill 3 and 4 soundtracks. But to insult her and say she is not "high calbre" and to say that her being the first Guest of Honor is "lame" is a disgusting thing to do. It's a slap in the face of a woman who works hard and does a terrific job in everything she's involved in. She won the American Anime Award for Best Voice Actress, and while to some that may not mean much, it does mean that at least SOME people recognize her for the talent she has. Her work is outstanding, emotional (try watching GitS and GiTS:2nd GIG and you'll see the range of emotions and personas she had to have), professional, she carries a great deal of talent, incredibly passionate and strong, and if you ever find the time to listen to her voice demo recording, you'll see she has great range, great emotion, and is obviously very skilled in her field.

Excuse me, but she is INDEED "high calibre", probably more so than most voice over artists that could have been chosen, and I think it's AMAZING that Anime Expo has announced her as the first Guest of Honor. That's an honor in and of itself. She herself is a very down-to-earth, very friendly, funny woman. If you don't like her being the first Guest of Honor announced, please don't denounce her and insult her and call her names; simply state, logically and reasonably, why you don't like her work.

I would have a few choice words for you, too, but I won't stoop to your level. I will simply say you are uninformed and you haven't taken the time out to appreciate true talent, or to even open your ears to it. How pathetic for you.

Way to go, Anime Expo!! Great decision!! Very Happy

A rather interesting guest of honor, but well picked! I really am looking forward for her and soon to be guest of honor! I really do hope that the rabid fanbase can spare her alive. o.O

Obviously you haven't seen Ms. McGlynn's list of credits here on ANN:

person#1419

While I could care less about the fact that she plays Major Kusanagi (Sorry GiTS fans), the two roles that are my personal favorites are Nuriko (Fushigi Yugi) and Jura Vandread.

I totally agree. And phobia, next time, check your facts before you insert your foot in your mouth.
