Maybe it is just me, but I have perceived a change in the way animes look over the last couple of years. That is not really unexpected. Anime style changes with time.

What seems to be the fashion now is incredibly rich and detailed sets and backgrounds with 2D characters animated in front.

I think I noticed this first last year with Occult Academy, but there have been a number of titles since that seemed to have the same effect: currently, Hanasaku Iroha, Stein's Gate, No. 6 and (erp) R-15 all have this same look. My Ordinary Life doesn't have the the same look, but I suspect that they are using the same technique given how elaborate their sets are.

In fact, the only one that doesn't seem to be doing this is Blue Exorcist. Three may be others that I am not watching.

There is no way that artists are grinding all that out organically straight from their pens. This has to be done with photographs scanned then rendered into an animation look. Further, they seem to be rendered into 3D models so that when the camera moves, you get different perspectives.

Overall I think this is a great trend. There does seem to a problem now and then how well the 2D characters fit with their backgrounds, but that actually seems to be a fairly rare problem. It seems that with the computer assist, they are able to spend more time and money on the characters, so they get colored and shaded better than they used to be.

Am I reading this right? And if so, does anyone here know what kind of software they are using?

Well photo realistic backgrounds are not all that new even though tech being used is. It is more of a style choice rather than a style change in anime.

If Nichijou or any of those shows use 3D backgrounds then there does not seem to be a problem with animators getting characters to fit the background or vice versa.
