I recently got the Haruhi film on Blu-ray and whacked it on the old ps3 to see what the quality was like. My TV screen is only 42" and while it looked really fantastic for the most part I did notice a few texture problems with lines running through the faces, block colours etc but only when I paused the film.
Is there in your opinion that bigger jump in quality between 720 and 1080 when it comes to anime for it to be noticeable to the naked eye when the episode/film is in running motion.
I really don't, while some of the lines may look ever so slightly crisper I honestly only can see this when it's paused.
Is this because most anime that is touted as 1080 is really only upscaled? If it was true 1080 would I then be able to really see the difference?
I don't care if this topic has been done to death, just delete the thread if you want or stick it up your bum.

I don't notice much of a difference if any. The jump from 480 to 720 is very noticeable though. Audio is a bigger issue for me. It seems like all the anime from Japan is in 2.0 which is fine, but I prefer listening to 5.1 audio. The voices are deeper in 5.1 and explosions sound a lot better to me.

Pretty much. Production resolution of most anime made today is around 720p, some obviously less. Aside from Ghibli movies and Shinkai's next movie, Hoshi o Ou Kodomo/Children who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below, I don't know of any digital anime actually produced in 1080p. Even then, on a 42" TV, if you're sitting more than around 6 feet away, the difference between 720p and 1080p will be minimal. You could try downloading the 1080p trailer for Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo and seeing if you notice a difference between 720/1080.

I think it makes a very noticeable difference for some movies (Akira for instance). For 90% of anime though, not really.

Old stuff like Akira was done on film so resolution isn't an issue. Digitally created anime can be upscaled but will never look any better than the resolution it was created in.
