R.I.P. The man did some great work. I love both Fist and VHD from the 80's.

What a shame....he did some really classic stuff. He'll be sorely missed. Animators and manga-ka really don't seem to live very long lives...there's been a lot of them passing away lately, at some very early ages compared to Americans...is it the work load that they put themselves through over the years that kills them? Very sad...R.I.P. Mr. Ashida.

Watched the FotNS movie just a couple months ago, he did some great work with a severely limited budget that influence the craft (for better and worse) to this day.

Need an interesting look? Tape a scene shown through a fish-tank, smear ink between a couple cells for a background...

I have feeling that he had been living a kind of rough life. Since he started his career in Mushi Pro, he is one of those old guys who went through ups and down of Japanese animation industry since 60's.

Toyoo Ashida is the man who found Studio Live, a subcontract studio specialized in drawing animations only. He mentored some of the notable artists like Takahiro Yoshimatsu (CD:Trigun) and Satoshi Nishimura (dir. Trigun) as well.

On JANICA, He got voted off from leadership role eventually. I believe he got voted off because he didn't have remedy for dwindling future animators along with the messy organization politics of JANICA.

If you know your Japanese animation artist, fans know Atsuko Watanabe as character designer of Valkyrie Chronicle anime. Among hardcore fans, she has became the poster girl for all dirt-poor animators of japan when NHK did short documentary show about lives of Japanese animator with her as a "star".

At least he left a significant legacy of JANICA that really matters. For that, I do mourn his passing.

Really makes me wish we got Devil Man Amon even more now. I only saw that thing fansubbed, and it was a friggin' classic. Though I guess it might be construed as anti-climactic if you wanted it to be a direct sequel to the 80s OAVs.

Man! First Dezaki and now Ashida!

The projects he's best known for were never exactly highbrow entertainment, but his work did have style and creativity. And lots and lots of gore, of course. The eighties wouldn't have been the same without him. RIP, man.

I give my condolences to those who knew him well.

Most of what he was involved with in anime were my favorites to watch. So he'll be missed dearly.
