Glad to see ININ get this. They're a publisher of what I consider niche games, but they put out lots of fun titles and the company deserves more recognition.

After how poorly Shenmue III was received, I doubt it.

If Suzuki drop off the nostalgia glasses and realize what went wrong with 3 - yes, there can be a chance.

Obviously not the chance that it truly deserved - but possibility is not out of reach.

Yeeeeeeah.....about that.....

The Shenmue anime got axed due to WB Discovery (or more specifically David Zaslav) going on their tax write off spree 2 years ago

So....safe to say, a second season ain't happening

The anime was probably the best chance for the story to continue, before corporate ****ery torpedoed that.

What went wrong with 3?

None of the three games were successes.

Shenmue II did come out in Japan and Britain for the Dreamcast, but the US never got that version. Instead, it was ported over to the OG Xbox for the US market. I can remember Electronics Boutique importing UK copies of Shenmue II to be played on modded Dreamcasts in the US...or using a Utopia disc or some other method.

I’ve never played any of the Shenmue games, so my knowledge about them is basically limited to Super Eyepatch Wolf’s excellent videos on both the original games and the third one. From what I gathered from those videos, Shenmue III has two significant issues that made it bad even amongst fans of the series:

1) Director Yu Suzuki refused to modernize the game in any way, refusing to learn any lessons the gaming industry had picked up in the decades since the first two games’ release. This left the game feeling incredibly clunky in terms of its narrative, mechanics, voice acting, et al.

2) The game was touted as a continuation of the story from the first two games but in reality was designed as more of a setup for future games in the series, making it feel more like a teaser of the things to come than the next part of an epic story.

Instead of watch youtube videos with a lot of misinformation, is better to play the games and judge for yourselves. IMO are amazing.

Also the anime can return in the future with other people or whatever.

Between the dated visuals especially for the first game and the clunky gameplay mechanics?

Amazing is a bit of a stretch

That's pretty much it. Back in the Dreamcast days there was some charm to them because they were trying genuinely new things for the medium and figuring things out (even with stuff as simple as voice acting). It was cool to travel around a fictional version of Yokosuka partaking of all the minigames and seeing how all the NPCs acted on their routines, it was really cool. A lot of it was crowd funding was never going to get that kind of scope so a lot of depth suffered. Quite a shame as that game updated could have been cool, but it was not to be
