(The) Blue Wolves of Mibu (TV) Source: Manga (ongoing @ 15 volumes by Tsuyoshi Yasuda) Demographic: Shounen Animation Studio: Maho Film Genres: action, adventure, drama Themes: Bakumatsu era, historical, idealism, samurai, Shinsengumi, swordplay Plot Summary: It's 1863, the twilight of the shogunate, and Japan is on the cusp of monumental change. The streets of the nation's capital are soaked in blood as political upheaval and rising tensions between masterless, wandering ronin and government samurai set the stage for one of the most turbulent times in Japan's history. Young orphan Nio is no stranger to the harsh realities of the world, and yet he can't help but cling to his burning passion for justice and desire to change the world for the better. One day, he crosses paths with two men who will become central figures of the coming revolution: Hijikata Toshizo and Okita Souji, two of the founding members of a group of hated ronin known as the Miburo—who would later become known as the Shinsengumi. Inspired by the efforts of the so-called "Blues Wolves of Mibu," Nio decides to join the ranks to help carve a path to the world he wishes to see. But with new betrayals and reversals every day, will Nio be able to stay true to his conscience? I generally like Japanese historical dramas from this time period, but I think I'll give this one a pass. I may actually be a little full with respect to this particular era.

I share Blood's opinion so I hope that the show offers something beyond the premise to make it worth watching.

That was a weird premier. It's ostensibly a story being told about Nio and the Shinsengumi, but near the end, the voiceover seems to be Nio's pov. At first I thought, "Oh, hey, Nio turns into the old man, but no, he's Shinpachi. (Maybe Nio grows up to be Gintoki? )
It was...ok, but every time someone burst into a big grin, it was so ugly it made me wince. I don't know what they were thinking. Side note: In Caitlin Moore's review in the Preview Guide, she mentions three other series. I've watched all three, but had to look them up to remember what any of them were about or who the generic protagonists were. Not sure whether to laugh or cry about that... |

I kind of already have a full viewing schedule (too full in fact) but I still decided to have a gander. The first episode left me feeling uncaring in that nothing was bad yet nothing was that good or noteworthy either. If I had to describe the premiere then the word would be bland and the problem is that this season is too loaded for bland.
That said, I am sure that those who love the time period/setting will be invested. |

man as usual, just too many anime get released and we get dull historical dramas that sadly come out after the previous season had The Elusive Samurai.
This is just not well animated and the characters, outside of the lead, are forgettable. Just another waste of time in an industry that is more than willing to greenlight too many shows instead of picking shows people will actually give a shit about. |

You have to get slightly more critical every year since the schedule is getting fuller and fuller.
A show like this one might have had a small fanbase if it released during the calmer 2010 seasons... but not now. |

I hate feeling like I'm being a snob and a villain since I know I have been called out before for being extremely prudish towards a lot of shows every season, but when there are so many...there is no more room for being decent enough. You have to be compelling and good and with the industry eating itself inside and out and burning out its animators, there is no more excuse for how bad a lot of anime has gotten. |
