I will cop with being a little jealous of people who can probably look at this and go rainbolt mode, giving me the exact make and model of the train in question.

Well, the big clue is right in the picture: 2463. It's a Seibu Railway 2000 series, a New 2000 series to be more specific.

Fun show so far. It's all pretty weird and random, and that last episode was a lot, but I'm really enjoying the ride!

Few stylistic choices in anime or in any artform are as polarizing as surrealism -- you either live for it or you can't stand it. (One needn't look any further than the stark contrast of passionate opinions towards Shaft Animation Studio to understand that much.) So I am choosing to believe that that is why Train to the End of the World doesn't rank higher when ANN or similar outlets do their weekly fan polls. It's not for everyone, and I'm at peace with that. Personally though, I am a sucker for surrealism in anime and manga, so I am entirely onboard this shoo shoo train.

Also I know this article is mainly focused on Mizushima's stylistic contributions, but I am compelled to mention that Miho Tsujibayashi's soundtrack is outstanding. One of my favorite anime OSTs of the past few years. So that, if nothing else, deserves more love and attention.

I've been pretty surprised at how low it lands in the cumulative ANN rankings! The season doesn't feel terribly strong overall, and Train has a really charming chemistry between its leads that I thought would win more people over.

I do think sometimes it gets surreal for its own sake, and it sometimes seems to lose track of what makes the show tick, outside of overwhelming abstract insanity. But -- while it's leaned more into that lately, especially in the latest episode -- most of the show is, for me, just about watching four sometimes functional humans bounce erratically but believably off of one another.

Also, I haven't been quite as caught up in most of the soundtrack, but good god if I haven't found myself chanting ga-tan go-ton and intentionally letting the OP and ED play out in full every single time.
