IIRC, Funimation’s concept of a “digital copy” wasn’t a download like you typically get from major studio movies, right? It was more that you’d have the ability to stream that one title from funimation.com, even if you didn’t otherwise subscribe to Funimation’s streaming service. Still an awful way to treat customers, of course.

Knew this was coming, but still annoying--I much prefer Funimation's player and settings to CR's, and, crucially, CR has far few English closed captions. Funimation had some gaps, but Crunchyroll almost never has English CC and it makes watching so much harder, it's really unacceptable.

Time to go check everything on my watchlist and see what isn't on Crunchyroll so I can watch them all while it's still possible.

Actually, English closed captions have just started on Crunchyroll (I think this started earlier this week). For now, only a few recents have them. It'll take time for more to come.

Besides, I knew something was going down when closed captions were finally coming to Crunchyroll.

Just some of the 180+ titles/language options that have not transferred to CR yet:

Wolf's Rain (OVA finale episodes)
The Tatami Galaxy
The Vision of Escaflowne
Yuri Kuma Arashi
Adolescence of Utena
Silver Spoon
FLCL
Serial Experiments Lain
Durarara
Outlaw Star
Technolyze
Black Butler (everything besides Book of the Atlantic?)
Gurren Lagann (dub)
Steins;Gate (dub)
Dragonball Super (dub)
Kamisama Kiss (sub)
Sgt Frog (dub)
etc...

So related to this news - I heavily suspect the reason the One Piece dub for example took forever to transfer over was because they literally had to wait out and/or rework it's streaming exclusivity contract with Funi because there was no wordage in the paperwork to cover a hypothetical company merger (the DB Super dub still isn't on CR for likely the same reason).

I'm hoping that's the case with some of these, but I just don't know. Especially given that a lot of them aren't big flagship titles, I'm worried they'll fall by the wayside and those Funi exclusivity contracts won't be renewed. It does make me appreciate the physicals I do have (I've managed to pick up a fair amount of the shows listed above over the years), but it's such a loss for fans overall to lose easy, legal access to these shows until who knows when. Whether it's waiting on a window to rework streaming exclusivity contracts, third party license roadblocks, or if CR simply has no interest in renewing them.

There's a list linked on Bluesky of anime that hasn't transitioned to Crunchyroll yet.

Insane how this merger was a complete loss for everyone but Sony - customers screwed over time and time again, voice actors screwed over. I don't know what Crunchy is actually retailing right now but I've kept my Funi account since it was grandfathered into a cheaper price and though I was expecting a price bump I wasn't expecting it to double for a worse product. Annoyingly they can and will get away with it because they're basically the only one in the business and even if tons of people end up pirating after this it probably won't make much of a dent in the end. Sad stuff, I always preferred Funi to Crunchy and this drives that home.

The end of an era. Funimation may be gone soon, but the brand's legacy of bringing Dragon Ball Z to the States and saving One Piece from becoming a flop will forever cement it into anime history. And for that, I will forever be grateful. And for good measure, its acquisition by Sony - for some reason - turned me into fan of their consumer electronics.

Considering this was theoretically meant to happen years ago... Took them long enough. Wonder if they'll actually transfer all the missing shows or just say "everything you loved on Funi is available on CR Smile" and leave it at that.

Right, it was like the Ultraviolet codes you get with a bunch of major studio movies. Except they'd actually sell some of those digital codes as standalone purchases, which makes it seem like you were actually buying digital copies like you get on e.g. iTunes.

It's astounding how every single thing the Crunchyroll brand has bought/absorbed/steamrolled has become objectively worse. If they were actively trying to screw over customers and nothing else, they couldn't have asked for better results.

This is my edited list of the available list. (I made it for another place that had the original next to it, so you'll have to do the comparing yourself)

The blanks represent shows I removed from the list, but in most cases, only the sub of the shows I removed are on CR - I also moved the Live Action movies to the bottom, as I doubt CR would ever consider them. I left the Free! Orchestra thing because CR does host music videos and that kinda fits.
