And there you have it. Frieren and FF beat the final episode of OP's near 4 year and half year arc. Back in July 2019, the beginning episode had a 5.2 rating and now ends with 3.4. What's interesting is that last weeks chart was a anime original episode and the rating was 3.5. An original episode got more ratings than the manga adapted episode finale. To think that 10 years ago from this weeks chart, OP had 8.8 ratings then 10 years later, it would be getting beat weekly by these new shows.

And before anyone replies, if you were following the charts from a decade plus ago, you very well know if someone told you OP would be getting beat in ratings weekly in the 2020's by something not called Sazae-san, Conan, Doraemon, Shin-chan, you wouldn't believe it. The ratings for OP's final arc/saga will be interesting. Taking into account that we know the 1 chapter adapted per episode will continue because they were refuse to go on hiatus for the past 10 years, due to the length... the fact that its actually a possibility within 5 years OP could drop to the 1's and show up in and out of the chart is a reality that can't be ignored.

I just find it remarkable that Frieren charted so high despite being both a new show and a late-evening show; all of the rest of the top 8 are in prime early evening slots and all but one of those is a decades-long staple. (And the other new series has roots going back to the '90s.)

I guess you don't need much more evidence that Frieren stands among the year's top titles in popularity as well as quality.

Well, to be fair — Frieren's popularity is one thing, but Daigo's good ratings are the weird case of back riding on a really good TV spot on Friday at 5:30 PM right before Conan, where even the bad shows rarely go down than 3.0%.

^ You are ignoring the fact that OP's heavy decline (compared to Sazae, Chibi, Conan's soft decline) is making it possible for these things to happen regardless of popularity or starting in front of Conan. Kimetsu no Yaiba is legitimately the only new series to surpass OP regardless of OP's decline because it was beating or challenging Sazae-san in certain weeks. There are levels to this.

As for Daigo, I expected someone to reply to me saying that, hence the start of the next paragraph in my post after what you quoted (which is why I'm pondering if you stopped reading right at the quote) specifically gave notice. Your point about Daigo doesn't hold when exactly 10 years ago during the Fall Season, Space Brothers aired right before Conan (Sunday) and couldn't beat OP. In 2006-2008, Kekkaishi aired before Conan (on a Monday) and couldn't beat OP like Daigo is doing. Kekkaishi was in the 8.0 ratings, but OP was higher. Yatterman remake, a historically popular Japanese series, took Kekkaishi's slot in 2008 and unsurprisingly beat OP. The irony here is that Conan switched to its current timeslot a month or so after Yatterman and lost its 10.0+ level ratings. It's ratings right now are what it was doing back on Saturday 2009 timeslot. Conan's ratings grew over the years to surpass OP then reached back to 10.0+ then ended up back to its original Saturday timeslot ratings while OP declined (Obviously it had some slight increases, but declined over time). After Space Brothers, Kindachi (2014), Kaito (2014-15), Denpa Kyoushi (2015), Kindachi (2015-16), Gyakuten Saiba (2016), Time Bokan (16-17), Boku no Hero Academia (2017) and more until we get to the 2020's did not surpass OP in Daigo's timeslot until the series that did it did it. (The 1st sign being the Season 3 finale of BnHA beating OP in September 2018 because OP dropped to the 4's that week during a manga episode).

WANNFH, I wish you had done the research before replying or read the next sentence after that quote that gave fair notice to anyone about to reply.

And that's where you completely missing the point - we're not talking about the ratings of the shows from a decade ago right now, but the Daigo ratings - which are solely influx by the timeslot where it runs in, but these high ratings have literally zero actual impact at all with other media (unlike Frieren, KnY or SpyXFamily, for example).

So yeah - the ratings of Daigo are not the achievements of the series of it's own, but piggybacking because it's placed in a timeslot near Conan (the same as with Love All Play, for example), and mostly represents how much people just turn on TV to not miss the episode of Conan that runs right after it.

Daigo and Frieren BOTH NEED SECOND SEASONS.

It's absurd that Japanese ratings agencies don't measure viewing of recorded programs. Nielsen has done this in the US for decades now, so it's not a technological obstacle. It must have to do with political struggles among networks, program producers, and advertisers. My short career doing TV research made it clear how much politicking goes on to determine how ratings are measured.

That creates an immediate obstacle to late-night anime shows getting comparable ratings to those run in normal viewing hours.

That said, the 4.0 for Frieren is pretty remarkable.

Uchuu Kyoudai ("Space Brothers") originally aired at 7 am on Saturdays, but when it became popular it was moved to 5:30 pm where it could take advantage of big-ratings shows before it. That's a common method of TV programming.

That was fair for Uchuu Kyoudai considering how much big success it become (same happened with SpyXFamily reruns, for example) - but again, Daigo ratings have nothing with popularity of it's own and just representing how much of the pure advantage it's timeslot have.

Really - imagine one of the high-rated shows on Japanese TV which still have nothing but zero impact on the manga volume sales, to the point that it still on a very sharp decline even when the show is currently running (and it wasn't that great to begin with, so it's not really about hitting the ceiling) - and that's where it starts to be very odd.
