I started playing ff16, and immediately served myself a dose of humble pie. I was definitely suspicious of the transition to a more action centric game- especially after 15 revealed itself to be fairly shallow, imo, but so far its been pretty easy to acclimate. It feels like there's a lot of depth to what can be done, but the game is not mandating anything near the mastery level that DMC or GOW do. That may yet change- I'm not so far in.

SO2 remake was not on my bingo card either. Makes a degree of sense though- it is probably the best regarded of the series, and by memory the one most hampered by the limitations of the time. I'm intrigued to see what changes get made, in terms of systems, exploits, etc- SO2s Item Creation is one of the more ridiculous in the series. The new character art looks pretty good, if nothing else.

The Japanese Nintendo direct showed off a spiritual successor to the Ganbare Goemon games which looked fun and also a Uma Musume game with gorgeous sprite-based art. Shame they were left out in the west because they looked amazing.

I'm not comparing Metaphor: ReFantazio to Shin Megami Tensei out of some disparagement; this is just the kind of game Hashino and company are used to making. And hey, if you have a formula that works, keep at it.

While I can understand an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality, they had rather prominent text on the game's site for years that said "This is not Megami Tensei. This is not Persona." and the freaking head of the company said Studio Zero was founded because "'innovation' has been something that [Atlus] have not been meeting lately," so the fact that the team don't seem to be going outside their comfort zone at all is inherently depressing, regardless of the final quality. (Though to be fair, it's not like I know whether it was the team's choice or the choice of corporate executives that want some guaranteed money). Just to avoid being a complete Negative Nancy, one interesting detail that's come out about Metaphor is that the "fantasy language" shown in the trailer is actually Esperanto, just written in a highly stylized alphabet.

As for the Direct, Peach finally getting another game was probably the biggest surprise for me, so fingers-crossed that I like this one (never really got into 2D Mario games, and SPP wasn't an exception). It looks like her outfit(s) might be the source of her abilities, so that could be fun.

This is a big deal; it's long been believed the reason Super Mario RPG had been kept on ice was because it was a split deal with Square. Whatever happened, Nintendo finally buried the hatchet—and we're all the better for it.

When people say this do refer to the fact that a remake was a pipe dream for so long or with regards to the series not having a presence outside of the original SNES? The latter of which isn’t true as the game was on the Wii’s Virtual Console, apparently the WiiU’s virtual console, & the SNES Classic

Do find it odd it wasn’t on the New Nintendo 3DS.

Yeah, I don't know where Jean-Karlo is getting the "buried the hatchet" part from, as I've never heard of any animosity between Nintendo & Square(-Enix) regarding Super Mario RPG, since it's been re-released plenty of times before just fine. That sounds more like something you'd hear from blind fanboys who blatantly make something up to justify their anger over stuff like "Why isn't Geno is Super Smash Bros. already?! He's the BEST! It must Nintendo being jealous of Square-Enix, or something; that's it!".

(Also, just to clarify, I'm not saying that Jean-Karlo is one of those people, but using "buried the hatchet" sounds like he was going off of hearsay from those kinds of people online)

It's pretty obvious that Super Mario RPG is simply a case where Nintendo can't just do whatever it wants with it, because Square-Enix co-owns it, & I believe any of the characters that came from RPG, like Geno & Mallow, are actually owned by Square-Enix, not Nintendo. Obviously, these are two very busy companies, so organizing something like a Super Mario RPG remake requires a lot of coordination & effort between both parties... which requires time when both are busy doing tons of their own individual projects.

I am so on-board for the SO2 remake. Pre-ordered it immediately. Going to have to dust off my copy of the anime.

There are people who thought 2023 was going to be the swan song for the Switch. Those people are fools. It seems that every main Direct is just showing off one big announcement after another with no signs of Nintendo winding the Switch down. When you're releasing a new 2D Mario in the console's seventh year, that's clearly confidence. I really don't know what Nintendo is going to follow up with, but they got no shortage of stuff they could pull out.

The big announcements for me were probably Mario Bros Wonder, Super Mario RPG, and Star Ocean 2. Seeing Geno and Mallow rendered in high quality with a newly arranged soundtrack hits all the right notes. I wonder what they'll change though as that gauge in the UI intrigues me and admittedly the original has some wonky issues with gameplay balance (there's basically no reason to use Bowser or Mallow later in the game). As for Star Ocean, there was a leak, but I didn't expect a full-on HD-2D style remake which really helps retain the old art style that was really lush and detailed. Also fascinating how it not only has dual audio, you can even use the original 1998 Japanese cast. So yeah, looking forward to that one.

Now just to wonder what the new Peach game is going to be like

Gotta hard disagree on the later Mario RPGs not hitting right. Paper Mario 64 and TTYD are not only my favorite Mario RPGs, but honestly among my favorite RPGs ever (maybe not top 10, but probably somewhere in the 11-20 range). Mario and Luigi had some great titles, though I would say none of them would rank as high as the first two Paper titles or Mario RPG for that matter, part of that is I like having a wider variety of companions whereas Mario and Luigi obviously keep it to just the two brothers.

Paper Mario 64 & TTYD were fine games if you ignore both games having somewhat similar plots of Peach being kidnapped with the first having the additional gimmick of needing to collect several stars a plot elements form SS. And some chintzy elements like only being able to use two Party Members in battle, Party members in the first game simply being extensions of Mario. And the stage play mechanic from TTYD which while funny was kinda dumb.

Looks like I'm buying a Switch. I have a copy of Super Mario RPG, but I've always wanted an updated remake and this looks like something I need. Sucks because I really don't want a Switch, I have no use for a portable handheld, it's a lot of hardware that I'll never use. What are the chances of Nintendo announcing a modern console with this decade's hardware before the game is released?

I mean my Switch almost never leaves its dock, and yet I consider it to be a fantastic investment. I almost exclusively buy first-party titles for it, but by this point I own substantially more than I've owned for any other Nintendo console. It's just a hit machine.

Seconded, my wife and I both have our own and she uses handheld WAY more but there are so many great 1st party games and basically all of the mid-tier studio games that can't afford to chase PS5-fidelity graphics end up on Switch now, it's awesome.

I don't think Psaro was an elf as well, at least that's how I remember it. He's a perfect fit for a DQM protagonist at any rate.

Really been digging FF16 so far. about 15 hours or so in.It reminds me a lot of playing a really pretty PS2 RPG for better and worse sometimes lol. But the story almost feels like modern version of the classic games. The characters are good and fun. The combat is great if you give it time. I only wish they didn't do the 7R thing and lock the higher difficulty behind NG+. I know FF isn't know for its difficulty, the combat shines the most in longer skirmishes.

As for Metaphor: ReFantazio; Going to pretend its Persona 6.
