In honor of the upcoming Memorial Day holiday in the U.S., I'm planning to write a blog special entry about anime series where the plot and/or characters are heavily-influenced by the (usually early) death of a character. The qualifiers for this exercise are as follows:
1. The character must die within the series (even if in the first few moments) 2. After the character's death, the character cannot be physically present as a separate entity except in flashbacks (i.e., not undead or copied - and yes, I'm going to say that Summer Time Rendering violates this rule) 3. Despite the lack of presence, the character must have a regular (if not pervasive) impact on events and/or character behaviors and motivations. To make sure I'm not missing anything major, I'm open to recommendations here. The ones I have lined up so far are: Le Chevalier d'Eon Cross Game Gurren Lagann Oshi no Ko Any other good suggestions? I'd like to include at least 2-3 more. |

Nobuto Matori from this season's My Home Hero?
As jerkass as he is, his murder DOES kickstart the whole plot. |

Naoki Urasawa's Monster.
spoiler[ Adolf Junkers: He doesn't appear much, other than a flashback or two. But him getting killed by Johan is what spurned the entire plot for Dr. Tenma and all that crazy suspenseful stuff, thereafter]. Last edited by Tony K. on Sun May 28, 2023 12:44 am; edited 2 times in total |

So something like I Want to Eat Your Pancreas? Hmm.. not sure if it counts. My memory is hazy on it. Maybe Akame Ga Kill?

If remember correctly Rainbow - Nisha Rokubō no Shichinin had some of this stuff. Also Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash.
If I had to make one personal recommendation it'd be Major, but very few people here have seen it. While the character isn't shown in flashbacks after their death, they are present in like all the openings past the first season and they continue to be one of the prime motivators for the main character. There are multitude of other ways that character continues to influence the story. It's a whole thing for that show. |

Thanks for the suggestions! I did end up using a couple of them.

I don't know if it's too late, but Siegfried Kircheis from Legend of the Galactic Heroes I think is a pretty good one.
