Some might call such a decision stupid but it is what it is. Now, this is the first time I know of a VA being let go because of fan dub connections. Will CR do the same to some of the Eng. dub VA who have worked on fan dubs? So many speculations to be had.

Which is a worse affront to anime, subs or dubs? Then, which is worse, subs or Fansubs? And then apparently the worst Fandubs...Yeah, CR can't let that slide... Confused

I've heard that voice actors are under contract to not do fan projects like this, but I still think it's a stupid rule. I've also seen David Hayter do Snake in YouTube videos in the past and nothing came from it.

Which is a bit ironic and somewhat hypocritical considering CR started out with streaming/hosting streams to pirated anime material. Yes, CR has changed since then but still.

Fandub of a 90 second trailer? The heck, I understand maybe for an entire episode, especially if it were leaked. But for fandubbing a trailer??
Or was it one of those dubbed manga videos?

Thank you. I was about to make same comment. I think irony is great. I use to upload so many fan subs I did late 70s, 80s and 90s to CR in early 00s, it sickens. Me to see what CR is today. Having brother who spent much career at Sunrise, industry in general sickens me to what it now is. New anime does not suck, but what industry has become does. Sad So I feel bad for seiyu being canned by CR becuase she likely will not be hired by any one else because this. Companies talk to each other before consolation, now with everything controlled by a couple companies, her career is over. Sad

In regards to the American market, if voice actors are dropped, I highly doubt it will be Crunchyroll's decision. The American market treats these people like Broadway treats the StarKid alumni: they know there is money to be had in Internet sensations, and proceed to hire them to get in on the action. It's the Japanese who have a problem, since they're so desperate to protect their copyright.

The closest parallel I think we have to this is the Toei-Funimation thing that happened a few years back. Because Toei hates fun, they got really pissed at Funimation when they started hiring actors affiliated with Team Four Star, such as Scott Frerichs and Nick Landis, and I think they threatened to sever their contract if Funimation ever worked with them again. It's why you hardly see them in anything these days. The only ones that really survived are ones with roles that are too iconic (e.g. Chris Guererro), were never that affiliated to begin with (Amber Lee Connors), or became industry professionals in their own right (Marissa Lenti).

Why? Anime outside of Japan was founded on things like this, folks need to know their history.

They’d have to fire a third of their talent pool. Not even joking.

If Toei has opposition to derivative works like fan dubs, then they should be angry at "Dragon Ball" as that and the manga version are loose adaptations of "Journey to the West". Likewise, if Toei was so concerned on an IP of theirs being "tainted", they should have not given any Toei IP to 4kids.

Most modern amateur voice acting websites ban fan dubs or even fan projects in general nowadays because of this kind of stuff. Too many trigger-happy corporations, especially on the Japanese end, are aware of this material now. Outside of SEGA (who lets Sonic, and only Sonic, fan material pass), the clamps have been shut tight. Understandably, no one wants to deal with it, and they don’t want amateur talent to do anything they might regret 5-10 years later.

Rooster Teeth and Marvel on the American side are also known to be brutal to fan projects (and those that participate in them) that get too much attention or “show them up”. Star Wars has also become far less friendly to fan material in recent years, and Star Trek killed their fan community some years ago. It’s all about protecting the IP, fan passion be damned.

As far as the Crunchyroll and Bang Zoom talent pools are concerned, as long as nothing resurfaces of the affected actors’ fan dub/fan project pasts things will probably stay kosher.

I agree with the guy above. Anime outside of Japan was founded by stuff like this. No need to disrespect it to this extent.

He hasn't voiced the character since 2008, Kojima isn't at Konami anymore, Konami doesn't make games anymore. Pretty sure they don't care about what goes on with Youtube or Snake saying "That was some good ass Tekken".

I'm not defending CR's decision here, but I'm thinking the major difference here compared to all the other VAs that got their start with fan dubs (and there are plenty of them), is that maybe she was doing them concurrently with her professional dubbing work?

But even still, I know a few ENG actors who are able to do side fan projects while also working (albeit not any fandubs that use actual show footage, but since I don't know if her fan dub was based on manga panels or the PV - it might be a moot point).

Still a really dumb move by either CR execs or some producer at whatever casting director/studio works on CR French dubs.
