I thought that Sanrio Boys was just alright. I mean it still tells a good message. It just was not executed well. I am so glad the review mention Kouta ignoring his friends. That bothered me so much while watching. I also could not stand the otome game talk to the player moments or the in your face fan service shots.

I think it's a little unfair that this review came from the person who voted it the worst series of Winter 2018, but I guess the axe was already grinding.

Personally, I had the most fun watching it as a metaphor for homosexuality. It was never as open as everyone's darling, Yuri!! on Ice, but it often seemed like there was a little more to the characters' individual issues than could really be explained by just a cute key-chain or two. That interpretation also made the twist ending much more fun to watch.

Sure there were negatives, but only about as bad as basically every other slice-of-life show ever. Part of the reason shows like this keep getting made is because they aren't expensive to animate, so I usually consider slide-show segments a neutral grade, rather than a negative. The pre-eyecatch POV segments were also weird, but the last quarter of the show dropped them after sending them off with the amazing crab bit.

I remember thinking with the Puroland segment that, "this could have been a really good spot to bring in a guest director and really play with the presentation," but aside from that isolated feeling of wasted potential, I don't think the middle section bombed as hard as this review made it out. It's only natural to have an episode or two where the assembled cast aren't tackling some major obstacle, and it really is just the two episodes following the Puroland trip where nothing major happens.

I also think it came together much better in the end, and I can't actually think of any major developments that weren't set up fairly well in advance. Maybe this was just because watching the ending basically every week reminded me that the play was coming. I ended up having to (though I skipped through it a couple times), just to make sure I didn't miss the scene after (and there was one every episode after the first, though I've seen reviewers here miss those in episode reviews). And while it never got a full episode, I was glad Kouta's mistreatment of his "old" friends got addressed for what it was, and got resolved fairly well.

In short, it's really not all that bad. I would even go so far as to rate Yuu as one of Soma Saito's best individual performances, because man does that boy chew the scenery.

I don't really have an axe to grind here, and I certainly don't hate the show, which is why I made the decision to call it the most disappointing series of the season rather than the worst. I get that that feels like semantics, but it is a difference. Smile

I do understand what you're getting at, though. Also, I did mean to mention Yuu's VA in the review and totally forgot - you're right, he was terrific!

I mean, taken another way, you must have really liked the first half to be more disappointed by the second than by any single other series that ran this past season.

But at least we agree on Yuu. Very Happy

I didn't think that the first half was that strong but the series definitely took a dive starting with the Puroland episode.

My feeling when I saw the first few episodes was that this had been planned for female characters and someone had the idea to insert stereotypical anime boys for stereotypical anime girls.

C+ is too high. C- for me.

I REALLY liked the first half of this show. I LOVE the OP (still do!). I think Shunsuke and Yuu are really lovely drawn characters, with great seiyuus, both with issues that needed to be (and are!) addressed. I really liked the direction the show took...it made me think about Sanrio without making me feel I had to HAVE Sanrio.

...

...and then Kouta wanted to sparkle...and the show lost it's 'said sparkle' to me. And that sucked. I really REALLY wanted to love this show. But yeah, I agree with Rebecca...it was disappointing. I hated how Kouta just dismissed his friends. I felt rather uncomfortable as a viewer, watching all that Kouta built up crumble...and for what...sparkles?! No. Thats not ok.

I'm glad it all worked out in the end, but yeah. Disappointing is the correct word.

I may have picked Death March to the Parallel Rhapsody as my most hated anime this season (and I LIKE isekai anime), but while I managed to finish both...yeah...I am disappoint in Sanrio Boys.
