Am I the only one who was reminded of the bath episode in the original Adventure? The one at one of the early episodes when they reached the mansion and decided to relax. I remember how Joe was absurdly shy and all the other boys made fun of him. xD
Remembering that episode made the "fanservice" in tri2: Ketsui a lot endearing. Especially seeing how the guys felt flustered by the girls barging into their side of the bath. xD |

You're not the only one, yet people were whining and moaning about this scene in Tri. as if Digimon was only all about monsters fightan and other shounen tropes. |

The entirety of this arc I could feel Joe's struggles with managing his responsibilities as a maturing person clashing with the whole Digidestined thing that he no longer wanted to hear. Leaving behind childhood for adulthood is always a step no one enjoys, but I honestly wish Joe hadn't called himself a coward the way he did because he was being far too hard on himself.
spoiler[It's about time their Digimon went Mega! :D]
I can't tell you how tired I am of this so-called most beloved deadly tradition spoiler[especially when it keeps happening to one of my favorite Digimon.]. |

Digimon truly has upped its A-game with tri.
That being said, spoiler[Leomon getting killed in every other season] is starting to become a habit for the series. I mean, like whoa.... |

This episode was okay I suppose. A lot of focus on Meicoomon and Mei, which is fine, I just don’t find them particularly interesting just yet. Meicoomon is kind of annoying and spoiled, and Mei is typical shy anime girl.
I do like the character stuff with Mimi and Jou more interesting than Taichi and Yamato’s continued angst. The problem is that it comes to a resolution relativity quickly, which lead to an underwhelming Ultimate Evolution. I did love Leomon being the annoyed parent in this one. He even got to fight a little. Lol, Leomon dies again! Its really a joke at this point. Also notice Himeka’s smirk during that scene. So the series continues its weird stance on continuity. The people talk about Digimon as if they have no idea who they are, but we know it did since Gomamon is cooking and hanging out at Jou’s house. So all events in the Adventure and 02 happened yet people continue to not mention that Digimon have been a thing for a while? Theories about memory wipes or reality distortions are done now I guess too. The other kids fully aware of the 02 kids, they apparently just didn’t care to check on them (which is fine by me to be honest)? Its just weird. The animation for the fights are good, but sometimes too stylized, it ends up making the fights look a little messy, the last fight in particular. |

The final battle, in my opinion, was disastrous and a complete let-down. It is precisely because I've been waiting 15 years for this that I expected something better. The main issue I had was with the Ultimate Evolutions. They were problematic in terms of pacing, consistency and execution.
In terms of pacing, letting every single one of the evolutions play was a real time-waster and dragged the scene on for way too long. Any build-up they had for Vikemon and Rosemon was completely obliterated by the time they got around to them. In terms of consistency, no where else does it say that they should able to Ultimate Evolve, not in the original anime, PSP game or CSA Digivice. Finally, in terms of execution, the animation was boring and lack-luster and it was obviously a budget-saving attempt by Toei. Note that I'm comparing the tri. evolutions to one another. With the original series, the more powerful the evolution, the more flashy it was. The Ultimate Evolutions in tri. were more plain than the regular Child to Adult ones! Warp Evolutions would have solved everything. But no, Toei had to go animate all of the reusable stock evolution scenes so that they could just get it out of the way and fill up as much time as possible... |

The animation is TERRIBLE. Leave it to TOEI to cheap out on this. I swear, between this, Sailor Moon Crystal and Dragon Ball Super, I am now convinced that TOEI doesn't give a crap about anything not precure related.
As for the movie... I was very let down by the first one, but the 2nd one saved it. It was great, and of course... you-know-who get axed, as always. I don't like the new evolution sequences, they are very bland. In the series only the champion evolution was the same, while the perfect ones, while the same in style, were unique. Each digimon transformed differently, like Birdramon being engulfed in flames and Togemon becoming a flower. I have no idea why the movie uses the same transformation for everyone. To add insult to injury, they even use it for the ultimate evolution. Just another way to save movie, right TOEI? |

The "dance" segment aside, I wouldn't particularly say tri 2 had bad animation, in fact, I think it was better directed, particularly focusing on human characters, and Digimons too looked better. Or maybe I was just too disappointed with tri 1, I'm not sure. I did expect TOEI to not animate the dance because, duh, it's them, but somehow they managed to make it look even worse than I expected.
This was a really letdown, but not for Vikemon and Rosemon, I mean it for MetalGarurumon and WarGreymon. It's true that all of them should Warp Evolve, but Agumon and Gabumon especially so, it was a tremendous letdown they had to go for all the stages, let's be real, the Warp Evolution ALWAYS hypes you up for these two in particular, the other ones I think can go without them. Also, I wouldn't call the original Ultimate Evolution especially flashy for certain Digimon, example given: Zudomon's original evolution, Tri version. |

Yeah, but at least they were more unique. Each digimon at least had it's own element and different background. |

The Leomon vs. Ogremon fight during the File Island arc did actually coincide roughly with the bath episode in the original Adventure (which ended with Devimon's entrance), so this isn't so much the first time major plot moments have coincided with a hot springs episode, as the first time the hot springs episode in question has been fan service instead of disservice. I think the changed voice cast helps keep the grown-up versions of the DigiDestined separate from their childhoods selves, at least for me.
Knowing this is original-verse takes some of the edge offspoiler[ of Leomon's inevitable death. He'll just go back to being an egg again]. Again. I'm never sure where the "NO!" ends and the "NOT AGAIN!" begins with that guy. |

My sister both praised and bemoaned the fact that Meicoomon's "senpai~" face got the best animation. ^^;
Agreed with this review; I like that the character arcs, while they feel a bit retread-y (didn't we kind of already do these with the Crest arcs?), they do highlight just how much these characters have changed over the years. And yeah, all those still shots really underline just how badly the budget's straining here, but eh, it's TOEI. I didn't expect much better, if I'm honest. (And I still feel that Meicoomon was so over-designed, it basically gave away this movie's big twist. XP) My only other issue with this "episode" is the whacked-out timeline. It's apparently after the start of 02, given that we see David and his buddies in the first film, but then Ken shows up in his old outfit, and...what? Huh? |

Not necessarily. Unless I'm mistaken or missing something, he's probably in the same boat as Wizardmon, Pumpkinmon, and Gotsumon, from the first series, since he died in the real world this time. |

To me, Digimon Adventure was always more about the kids than the Digimon. So the fanservice at the beginning, to me, was definitely more on the "cathartic, natural expression of your modern otakudom" side. But I had giggly, blushy feelings for these guys when I was a kid, so seeing them in a more adult way feels like the show has grown up with me (Not to touch on the fact that they're only supposed to be 16, since we all know how anime fanservice works by now...)
I mean, really these movies are pure "fanservice" to begin with in that they focus on the more popular characters of 01, and show the mega evolutions that every one has been dying to see, so it didn't surprise me in the least to see physical fanservice too. Though props for the fanservice for girls! On a more serious note, it's really great to see Jou get the attention he deserves, and especially his relationship to Gomamon. I always wondered how it would be for these kids as adults - their Digimon essentially remain children forever (keep in mind the original Japanese refers to "rookies" as "child" form.) while their partners grow up. I think a lot of the scenes between Gomamon and Jou touch on this, as Jou is struggling with very adult, human things and Gomamon is incapable of really understanding why his partner has changed so much. Of course the two of them have always had very different personalities, but even with the the happy ending they got in this movie it makes me kind of sad thinking for their future.
Tri takes place 3 years after 02. It might be confusing because the dub pushed everyone's ages up by 3-4 years and said Tai and the others were in high school in 02, but they were actually only in middle school. As for why the Digimon Emperor keeps showing up, that's something that will presumably be answered in later movies. |

Man, that explains so much! Thanks! Agreed on Jou, btw. I feel like this is the part that was missing from Tai's arc in the first movie; I mean, it's not like I want the DigiDestined to just run away from a fight, but I do want some acknowledgement that becoming and being an adult is hard and messy and complicated. >.> |

That's a bit understandable considering if someone's only seen the dub they wouldn't know that because it was censored. Digimon has had quite a few bath scenes now that I think about it. The one in Xros Wars comes to mind. Complaints about fanservice in Digimon seem odd if you've ever watched the original version I liked this movie a lot better than the last one, but then again Mimi and Jou were two of my favorite characters. The scene in the bath house kind of makes me root for Taichi x Mei -Stuart Smith |
