Long story short, I was looking for some info on this anime when I stumbled across this page.

It looks like some kind of official page set up by the Japanese publishers of the Zipang manga, and it has Tomahawk missiles listed among the ship's weapons. (The BGM-109B and BGM-109C are listed, which are the anti-ship and conventional strike versions respectively.)

It looks like the people responsible for this story did their homework regarding Kongo-class destroyers, but I want to know how they explain the Tomahawk missiles being carried. IRL, the JMSDF hasn't fitted any of those missiles to any of their ships because it would qualify as a dedicated offensive weapon, which goes against Article 9 of their constitution. (Arguably, the very existence of the Japanese military violates Article 9, but that's for another thread.) What's even more confusing is the fact the USN was the only military force to ever use the anti-ship version of the Tomahawk, and they stopped carrying it at least a decade ago, meaning it likely would not be practical for the Japanese government to buy them.

Edit

I just noticed the Mirai's hull number is DDH-182, which signifies a helicopter destroyer, as opposed to being designated DDG-182, which would indicate a guided missile destroyer and probably be much more accurate.

For comparison:

Kongo-class guided missile destroyer
Shirane-class helicopter destroyer
Haruna-class helicopter destroyer

They forgot to mention that the ship is also capable of time traveling. Twisted Evil Seriously, I believe Kawaguchi added Tomahawks for dramatic reasons, using its much longer range (compared to Harpoon) to contrast its combat capability compared with WWII-era capital ships. Its MVSA-32J "Umidori" scout planes are also purely fictional.

...and a nuclear reactor on a shabby WWII-freighter.

...and a submarine that can't be detected while sitting in New York harbor. Oh wait, that's from Silent Service. Razz

I can understand wanting the TASMs for dramatic license, but I'm wondering if the story mentions the justification for installing the Tomahawks. I was wondering where the Umidori came from, though.Very Happy

I'm assuming details involve spoilers, so I won't ask. Anime dazed
