As long as the gameplay and story aren't effected, which they aren't, there's no problem.

It always bugs me how I tend to gravitate towards these news because I always wonder "how bad could those images be when the game's still going to be rated M anyways?".

Censorship is always bad, just on principle alone.

Quote:
Atlus stated that these edits were made so that it could release the game with a Mature rating from the Entertainment Software Rating Board

I'll bet that's not really true, as if to imply it would otherwise be AO. I think they just want to avoid controversy.

I don't know anything about the game but I can tell you that there's NO nudity whatsoever (because if there were, it could not be released in Japan). Therefore, the statement about requiring it to obtain an M is flat out untrue.

Also, game companies actually submit their own ratings, checked against guidelines. There's an automated procedure that check the submission and partially evaluates some content, but it's mostly up to the publisher. It is NOT the ESRB who assigns the rating. It's perfectly permissible to release an E-rated game as M if you wanted to. The only condition is that there are some penalties I believe if it doesn't meet the minimum upon second evaluation (from complaints).

However, given that these are supposedly minor changes from something that was not sexually explicit and non-nude to begin with, I'm sure that statement is there to deflect blame because they don't have the guts to push the original art through to begin with.

they should at least tell us what was censored. i mean really, no point in announcing this stuff if you're not even gonna let anyone know what it is that was specifically altered

Disappointed to hear about this. Looking over the CG scenes, they're no more risque than what NIS let go uncensored in Demon Gaze, and NIS are usually the first company to censor things when it comes to games.

I also find it weird how this supposedly threatens an AO rating yet seeing nude strippers and blatant sex scenes sex in GTAV only warrants an M rating. It does sound like a fear of backlash from websites and social media sites. Given Atlas also puts out the Persona series, they probably worry about that given Persona is one of the few Japanese games that is socially acceptable in the western gaming scene. I'll have to pass on this release like I did Criminal Girls.

Stay away from this or import if you want it. Don't support censorship.

Well, I know one has, probably had, what looks like(out of whatever the context is) fellatio with some small monster-thing. I don't think I can post it, though.

Well, just wait until after it is released and the inevitable comparison shots come out on Sankaku Complex and other sites.

Censorship is never good, even if you get the approval of the creators. Like they are going to say no.

Probably not showing the affected scenes is a form of limited damage control. Like reasonable doubt.

Do you see any children characters involved in any of that stuff in those games? It'd be a totally different story if that was case. NIS has said on multiple occasions that they are required do this censoring for the game to even be released here.

I don't support censorship either but realistically , I don't think Atlus could've released the games here without some cuts. Part of it is that Atlus is much more of a mainstream company than NIS, so perhaps they're a little more concerned about their reception from a mainstream audience. It's obviously a cultural thing too. America is fine with sexualized/sexually explicit adult characters but sexualized lolis/"child-like" characters are a big NO.

Honestly if Atlus was concerned for their image they wouldn't be releasing pervy games. The ESRB has too much power. The AO rating is bogus and needs revisiting. These fanservice games should not be threatened with AO when we have games like GTA and Witcher 3 that have tons of sex scenes in them.

That sounds like the prime motivator for this. Very similar to why Fire Emblem Awakening had it's bikini DLC censored when you see far worse in other games. Nintendo of America is far more concerned with their image.

The idea behind underage characters VS adult ones doesn't make sense, however. Plenty of games have gotten away with underage fanservice in western releases. So it's most likely a decision on Atlus' part, which makes me a bit worried how SMT x FE will be handled.

Yeaaaah, saw that image over on Kotaku. And wooooaaaah yeaaaah, can totally see why that image in particular would bump the game's rating up.

Oh boy here we go again, more Vita games getting gimped.
I'm just going to be blunt about licensing games from japan now. This goes out to NISA, Atlus etc.

If a game you're licensing has any questionable content that may that might raise red flags, DON'T FUC**** bother trying to bring it over in the place.

It's that simple, these games are niche as it is gimping them on the content that makes them sell is waste of time, effort and money. I'd rather see other games make it over here that stand chance of selling than setting in a store-room for 2-4yrs.
