Punch Line (TV) Genres: Comedy, Slice of Life Themes: Plot Summary: The series follows Yuuta Iridatsu, whose spirit has been separated from his body. Tagline: Once he sees underwear, humanity is destroyed!? Director: Yutaka Uemura Studio: MAPPA Script: Kōtarō Uchikoshi ---------------------------------- Upcoming anime by MAPPA. They're also working on another show for Summer but this one is an original series not based on anything. It was first announced during the Noitamina lineup back in November. And by the tagline, I can't help but laugh a bit. There are three previews out now and the latest one had a lot of unorthodox scenarios going on. Kinda amusing in a way with a lot of comedy. But hey who knows, MAPPA imo is a good studio with some recently established series like Terror in Tokyo and Rage of Bahamut: Genesis. This should be fun. |

LOL, not sure what I just watched. I think they are actually using the concept of panties as a plot device. I mean, the MC gets nosebleeds and some sort of power-up when he seems them..
Action was decent and it had a stylistic way of presenting them including some cartoonish scenarios. I think I'll stick around for more. |

I just want to make note of how this happened in the first minute of the episode:
Such a good start, just to have the show ruined by panties. Seriously noitaminA, get your shit together |

This could be the next "stupid" stylistic comedy everyone will catch, and I probably will too if it can keep up the yucks.

Episode 1
In a season of incredibly confusing, crazy, and random happenings, Punch Line dares to push the line. It really looked like it had something, until it seemed to transition it into spoiler[having some plot points about panties], feels like they messed up the good will they were building. And making spoiler[the main character a spiri]t so it makes it feel like we are an outsider to the crazy hijinks, kind of made some problems. I would say that a few things actually did work, and it was some well done comedy. The examples were the cat going to spoiler[show something on its computer before having to minimise a video of cats doing it], and the spoiler[magical girl transformation] scene that we saw was spoiler[her just dancing around the room]. Apart from those there was a lot of misses. |

Nowhere near as bad as it was made out to be. It's totally stupid, for sure, but it's fun and energetic in a way that nothing else this season seems to be (aside from BBB, which I haven't seen yet...thanks Funi). And the mahou shojo transformation gag made me chuckle quite a bit.
There seems to be a bit too much going on, though. The disembodied spirit part of the plot seems like one concept too many. |

Yeah, I don't know about this show. This is the last kind of show I'd expect to see on noitaminA. I like the visual style of the show but the whole "I see panties!" thing is pretty dumb. As some people have mentioned, the writer for this show is generally known for writing cerebral visual novels so I really hope this 1st episode is set up for some massive bait-and-switch. Maybe there's some incredible plot twist. Anyway, I'll probably hang on for at least another 2 or 3 eps to see how it goes. |

See I don't mind fan service, I don't particularly enjoy it but it can be done well like at the very start when she kick the guy and you can briefly see her panty. That's fine cause it doesn't stop the flow of the show and the camera doesn't focus on it so you can still see what's happening. But they couldn't leave good enough alone, they had to make a huge deal out of every single panty shoot possible, sigh.
Maybe there'll be enough of a backlash against it combined with enough of a "the rest of it is really good" that after episode 3 they'll put a lid on the panty shoot and focus on the everything, maybe… we can always dream. |

I love pantsu fanservice so clearly this show is for me. Plus, on board with the whole wacky vibe and cool action. Really like the production design of the show (I wanna live in that building). But yeah, I really love how lovingly rendered all those mouth-watering pantsu are...

Episode 2:
I heard that Rabura's character design was nerfed a bit. But overall, this episode was funny. spoiler[Glad to see others trying to cheer her up. And although not too much happened this episode, I think the overall humor was delivered well for this week.] Lol, the cat and his usual online porn makes his cameo again :p Kinda curious spoiler[how the story will take off next time with that cliffhanger though.] |

This show is much better with the protagonist shoved out of the way, into a corner. Can someone just exorcise him and remove him from the show entirely?

I found episode 2 spectacularly unfunny. I was onboard with the wackiness in episode 1, but this just did not land for me. Oh and there was a criminal lack of pantsu fanservice - CRIMINAL!
Plus, did they blow their entire action budget in the first episode? |

Yeah, once you remove the energy and wackiness, you have a pretty boring show populated with boring character and occasional panty shot. Even the humor is really down, I mean they already started recycling there joke.
1 and 2 were so different it's hard to even understand what this show is trying to be, but since it's cheaper to animate slice of life, that's probably what we'll get, with probably a few action heavy episode. |

Two radically different episodes and neither of them worked for me. The first one had the hook of the high energy, but this episode ewas so [expletive] dry in the humor departmet. Like the whole thing could basically be summed up in:
1. Girls dancing, singing shenanigans and wearing a pigeon mask 2. Girl growing stegosaurus spines to hide her bear pet These were basically the two jokes on the entire episode and they ran forever and dragged and weren't even funny to begin with. You know, by the time idol superhero girl started putting the stegosaurus things on her back I was really, really trying hard to not turn off the tv. Like I'm still surprised I made it to the end of that episode it was so frustratingly unfunny. At some point I almost yelled "I get that you're really trying to make me laugh but it's not working, for Christ's sake move on to something else". Don't remember many anime scenes making me so frustrated. There was also the horribly shoehorned scene of "cat giving breastxposition". The cat was the one thing I liked in episode two and even that became insufferable this week. So, basically, I'm gonna steal from dtm for this: |

I like how there are so many yelling about how "unfunny" Punch Line is when it's clear it isn't a comedy. What about the mostly pretty strong character writing so far? And when the sheer insanity of the narrative inevitably gets rolling, people will start complaining about how "it makes no sense" or "it's nothing but asspulls" when you didn't pay attention to any of the hints early on.
Anyway, this still has me engaged. The preview for the next episode shows this will be going to the more action-oriented feel the first episode had, and I'm looking forward to it. Last edited by ThatGuyWhoLikesThings on Fri Apr 17, 2015 2:51 am; edited 1 time in total |
