Link to press release on AOD

Some points to note-

-The release says that for the first time, you'll be able to hear English dialouge and Japanese score on the same track for the first time

-New dialouge is being recorded. (Not sure if the English dub score is being retained or not)

-The Widescreen mention probably doesn't cover the TV release, but rather the movies, which were animated in 4:3 but shown in movies in 16:9, however animated so that nothing would be lost in the occourence of a crop.

-Very cheap. $50 for 39 episodes.

-Released in HD.

I know there's a bit of dislike of DBZ (or it's fans, I dunno) on these and other forums, but for anyone still interested, this is a really good thing. Finally, a definitive collection after years of badly released, spotty 3 episode discs.

That's wishful thinking, since both the press release and trailer make no mention of the movies, the trailer is emphatically about "all 291 episodes" (and nothing else) and all the clips show the TV series cropped to widescreen.

I eagerly await some announcement from FUNi that this is all a big misunderstanding and they won't be cropping the series to widescreen after all... but I'm trying not to get my hopes up. It's sad, since this release sounds perfect in almost every other way, but the cropping makes it a no-sale.

An HD release has not been announced. They just have the materials to do it at some later time, since they remastered it in high definition.

I've been around enough bullshit marketting to realise that this has to be an error in communication. They wouldnt go so far as to basically redo the English dub to be more appropriate to people who aren't ten years old, and then just suddenly remove 20% of the screen. I'm placing my bet on there being a huge miscommunication, because we've seen that FUNimation and certian other companies aren't always capable of slipping up between departments etc.

Ahh, oops, my bad. I've been pretty tired recently.
