I think the deal with this particular group of Urusei Yatsura DVDs (TV volumes 16-20) is how much you'd enjoy them overall depends on how much you like Ryuunosuke; she's one of my favourite characters, wanting deperately to act like a normal schoolgirl but not having the foggiest clue how, but, if you don't care for her as much as I do, then you get several episodes of her you have to skip over.
Those DVDs do have a couple of the more interesting experimental episodes, like the one with Shinobu and that detective, and, especially, the one with Ataru's mother that's like a *more* serious version of Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer, with the mother trying to square the way she is now as a dull housewife with her youthful dreams and aspirations. Or something like that. Oh wait... I honestly almost forgot to mention that I actually discussed that particular episode here on this site in this review of the VHS version of volume 20 I wrote in the spring of 1999. Well, re-reading it for the first time in ages, at least it's better than most of the reviews from that era I wrote for a different site... the reviews I write in my blog now seem a bit more professional, though. |
