We still have the photo from Who Framed Roger Rabbit when we visited MGM Studios. RIP
Do the Mario! (I know, different) Addendum: Also, Al Feldstein who popularized Mad Magazine just died too. |

It's funny that people are looking at that Mario movie in a sentimental light, now. It's like the video game equivalent of that Dolph Lundgren He-Man movie.

I haeard about this yesterday. I understand the Super Mario movie was not the greatest, but I have a huge heart for that film (used to love it when I was younger). Bob Hoskins will be missed.
Thank you ANN for reporting on this. |

It's a terrible movie for sure, but in its own way it is a lot of fun. It kind of throws Mario into an almost Brazil like world but with more scenery chewing and being even less subtle. |

The Super Mario Bros. movie has a cult fanbase, of which I'm a part of, that see it as a criminally misunderstood movie (you can look up the Super Mario Brothers Movie Archives website if you don't want to take my word for it). Yes there were production troubles that made the actors miserable and it wasn't as literally true to the games as fans wanted it to be (and that's the only reason it's carried the stigma of "worst video game movie ever" even though it was historically the first ever made and there have been several truly bad video game movies since), but in the end it's still a fun sci-fi action comedy that's more creative and imaginative than people give it credit for. There's already finally a Blu-ray release being planned in the UK, which many fans are hoping will be region-free, but we'll see (my player's region-free). My defense out of the way, the prolific and talented Bob Hoskins will be missed. |

Without a doubt, the Super Mario live-action film is an unbearable train wreck, and no amount of eulogizing Hoskins will change that. Guys, just because you kind of sorta liked it when you were six doesn't mean it holds up to the test of time, nor does it erase from being a stain on Bob's career.
Plus it's just a disservice to keep bringing it up in relation to what talent the man really had. You want to see what acting Robert was capable of? Go watch The Long, Good Friday. That's the Bob Hoskins I'll remember. |

I'm one of the generation who saw Super Mario in a theater, and it was a train wreck. And I know I'm not alone in that judgment--Hoskins had never played the game, and he and Leguizamo joked that they hadn't the faintest idea what the HECK they were doing from one scene to the other. If we're going to eulogize Hoskins taking US mainstream paycheck work, I'd rather remember his Smee in "Hook", at least he had a sense of fun about that one.
Agreed: In '88, we were surprised that the Bulldog of British Gangland could do comedy in Roger Rabbit, and do it with perfect timing and deadpan. (Disney kept trying to promote Roger as the Lovable Marketable Character of the movie, which we thought was just silly; we were so sympathetic with Hoskins' character, who even liked the pest?) |

Bob Hoskins was one of those people that acted their parts and made those roles memorable. Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Mario Bros., Hook, he definitely made the roles stand out regardless of how good or bad the movies were. You will be missed!

RIP Bob Hoskins. It's funny just mentioned Who Framed Roger Rabbit last week. I remember going to see the film back in HS the first day it came out with some buddies after school. Never saw the Mario Super Bros movie. That was one I was leaving off the table. But Bob, kind of baffled me as being an actor who spoke perfect English but I later found out he had a British accent. I think he was the first actor that piqued my curiosity into the world of acting. He was a great actor and he will sorely be missed. Who Framed Roger Rabbit was my first Bob Hoshkins film.
