That is both the best and worst thread name ever.

There is not enough discussion of super robot anime these days. I mean super robot. None of this Patlabor/Gundam stuff (not that there's anything wrong with those, or you're talking about G Gundam).

I'm talkin' real badass, Go Nagai, crazy planet-throwing, Jupiter-slicing, burning courage.

In case you're out of the loop, super robot anime is good stuff, as long as you're in the right mindframe.

Anyway, discuss away. Classic stuff like Getter Robo or Mazinger, to newer stuff like GaoGaiGar or Godannar. Personally, I'm on a massive GaoGaiGar kick right now. Anyone else?

Super Robot is not for me, but I like me some Giant Robo, Go-lion and SRW. G Gundam was a disgrace to the franchise and should be disinherited. And, don't you know, only little kids like G. Idea

I just finished watching Godannar yesterday... for the second time. Sure it's fanservice on crack, and will never be accused of being Shakespeare, but damn is it fun.

I love the characters, the animation, all the goofiness and the one-liners that pepper the whole series. It's a great thing to just sit back, relax and turn your brain off for a while. Enjoy the show as a few bad-ass robots lay the smackdown on some monsters from who-cares-where. Plus, the ending is awesome... talk about closure.

Sure you don't need your brain very much, but with that much jiggle wandering across the screen, what use would your brain be anyway? Wink

Well, Giant Robo happens to be my favourite anime of all time. And despite the title, Giant Robo isn't a super robot anime in the same way that Fight Club wasn't an action movie.

But what's with all the G Gundam hatin', yo? I see that so much. I mean, sure, the show was abso-friggin'-lutely ridiculous, but that's what made it so *fun*. Not to mention Master Asia was all kinds of badass.

By the way, Diebuster 6 is finally out. Just finished watching it. What a fantastic ending, seeing as the beginning of the series wasn't very good. I heart Gunbuster.

G Gundam is a gret series. SD Gundam (the crappy CGI one from '03) is the true disgrace to the Gundam franchise.

If we're gonna throw Godannar out there, which is just awesome, then you gotta include Gravion. Now, Goddanar has more jiggle per scene then Gravion. Mizuki though adds just plenty to Gravion by herself. Godannar does have that 80's mech music though. I've found that Gravion's plot was better over all then Godannar's but again Godannar has more of the cool hair, screaming, 80's robot feel to it.

AARGH!! I forgot to order Godannar! I have the others as I'm a fanservice junkie--I had to waterproof my remote from the excessive drool.

I've been mentioning Sky Girls of late, but I only have one fansubbed episode. It nicely adds some interesting mecha with young girl fanservice. Give it a whirl and see what you think.

loli-loli-loli-pop!

How about Voltron? Does that qualify? I would think it would. That's old school bad ass super robot going on. I always liked Hunk the best. So under rated yup. I used to be able to quote the whole opening. I was addicted. Plus he looked bad ass, Voltron. To me Gravion, and Godannar to a lesser degree, resemble Gundams in their design. Voltron was just all kinds of uniqueness and coolage (new word btw, should be added to webster's yup).

I am woefully ignorant of the super-robot genre. Although I consider myself a serious Gundam fan, I actually do like G Gundam (some fans would have you believe that the two things are mutually exclusive). You have to be in the right mindset for ridiculous things like a guy shouting Shining Silver Kick and slicing through a building with the force from his kick. If you are in the mood it's actually a really cool show as it develops.

Would G Gundam be the only Gundam show that can be called super-robot, or does it not count as that either?

Gaogaigar is great if you can get past the boring ass first arc, which is skippable anyway. even if you hate mecha, it's a really fun series with a decent storyline.

I didn't like Diebuster at all. It hardly had any connection whatsoever to the original Gunbuster. I thought Nono was a bad imitation of Noriko, and the actual debut of the Diebuster itself seemed very tacked on. In the entire last episode I was sitting there going "There isn't even going to be a connection, and episode 5 had a promising opener for it." But that's when it happened. At the very last minute, the phrase that made me cry spoiler[Welcome Home] appeared. At that moment I became a little forgiving as I got a small taste of that feeling that I got when I finished Gunbuster. But that feeling is because of how great Gunbuster is and doesn't truly reflect the merit of Diebuster.

Yeah, Voltron definitely fits in with the genre, not to mention that it is totally awesome. : )

You're spot on with that. You relaly have to have the right mindset to like a super robot anime, like G Gundam, which applies to most any series. Most of them are completely over the top, and (usually in a Go Nagai series) don't make a whole lot of sense. But, the second half of G Gundam definitely out-does the first half, which isn't honestly that great. The first few episodes were awful, but it got better through the first half.

G Gundam is definitely super robot. I don't think you could really classify any of the other Gundam series as such, though Wing has a few super robot elements in it (but it's still not a SR series).

However, seeing as you actually liked G Gundam, you'd probably like a lot of super robot anime. I'd suggest Getter Robo Armageddon (AKA Shin Getter Robo: The Last Days of Earth), which you an get from ADV, and GaoGaiGar. GaoGaiGar hasn't been out in the US yet, but Media Blasters is going to release the first DVD soon. Unfortunately, the series really doesn't get very good until around half way through. (It's 49 episodes + 8 OVAs).

Much like G Gundam, the whole first half is pretty silly, but after that, it gets really rockin'. Not to mention the GaoGaiGar FINAL OVA is fantastic, and has the coolest super robot ultimate attack ever (look up "Goldion Crusher" on Youtube or something.)

Well, I do agree with you... sorta. I thought DieBuster was pretty good. Compared to GunBuster, no, it wasn't that good. If you try to look at the series on its own, I think it can be pretty fun. Seems to be a weird trend, I thought the second half was, for the most part, really great. Eps four five and six, I mean. Episode four was storyboarded by Hideaki Anno, so it had that crazy End of Evangelion feel, and episode five had Lark throwing a planet, which was pretty badass.

spoiler[It's supposed to be what happens to earth during the time that Noriko and Buster Machines 1 and 2 are gone, which is quite a long time. So the only real connection we get is the final scene, but, despite its flaws, I liked it. Just try not to compare it to the original so much.] Still, the visual throwbacks were a lot of fun.

Forget jiggly breasts, true fanservice is when Shin Getter Robo spoiler[cuts freakin' Jupiter in half with a giant Getter Tomahawk.]

Voltron is my all-time giant robot favorite. How can one compete with teh awes0me? One of the first shows I remember running downstairs on Sat. morning to plant my butt in front of the tube for. The weekend didn't start till Voltron with a big bowl of Capt. Crunch.

BTW, if you haven't all ready gotten the DVD box sets, do so. $24 bucks at Best Buy, and that includes the collector's tin box.

Nope, that is by far the worst name for a thread

Robotech all the way. Oldschool. Robotech is like the root of all mecha animes. Can't deny that. I bet, without Robotech, there would not have been a Gungdum franchise.

Ummm, I know I'm just beating the rush on this one, but Gundam is actually an older franchise than Robotech, ShinobiX.

You see, Mobile Suit Gundam first appeared in Japan in 1979, whereas Super Dimensional Fortress Macross (one of the three series Carl Macek edited together to create Robotech) didn't first air until 1982.

The two series are generally considered the beginnings of the "realistic mecha" sub-genre and set new standards of technical believability and story complexity within the mecha genre.

Super Robot sub-genre series are what generally came before, as described in this thread.
