Beautiful. I haven't seen the movie yet but this looks promising.

Gorgeous trailer, I absolutely will see this in the cinema. Preferably subbed.
Interesting how it's rated PG-13. That's rare for a Ghibli film.

Metal: It's the smoking which put it over the top. Though in Japan, it'd probably be the equivalent of PG.

At any cost, even if it means missing something I love, I will find a way to see this movie in theaters. Mr. Miyazaki has changed my life, and this is my last chance to see an actual Miyazaki movie in theaters. I will find a way to see it on the big screen, no matter what the cost is!

I don't know if that's really it. "Rango" had no shortage of smoking, as well as alcohol consumption and even gun violence and it retained a PG rating. I'll grant you, there was some controversy from some "groups" that were very upset over the rating of that an animation film would be allowed to have such things at all, but the rating stood. I'm not sure I'm convinced smoking is what gave this a PG-13 rating.

I think it's the war themes, particularly since it's from the Japanese side shown to the Americans. I'd look at Grave of the Fireflies for comparison, but it wasn't rated when it was released on home video here.
Still, the MPAA has made tons of bad ratings. They're just as awful as the ESRB, IMO.

The only times I think it affects films are ones trying to get a PG-13 over an R, so they cut out all of the blood in an otherwise extremely should-be gory situation (GI Joe Re-something-or-other), or when a film gets an NC-17 which may as well be blacklisting it. Not able to play in most theaters, much less receive and marketing, is just a death wish to anyone seeing or knowing your movie, so you have to cut to an R. Otherwise, G to PG-13 might as well all be the same to me.

The MPAA is so obviously biased towards sex and nudity. You can show tons of violence and still be rated PG-13, yet if you say the f-word one too many times or show a pair of breasts; it's automatically R. And there are even some R films that should be rated NC-17 just because of their violence. For example, Lost in Translation could have easily been rated PG-13 while The Passion of the Christ should have been NC-17.

You can show a lot of bloodless violence and retain a PG-13, which might as well be labeled under fantasy because of how inconsequential it makes action movies look. Mow down an entire platoon of bad guys with a high powered machine gun, not a drop of blood, PG-13. Show tits for too long, even a snippet of genitalia, and you get an NC-17.

Keonyn: Rango's cartooney, though. The Wind Rises is a lot more realistic. Plus, Disney probably didn't want to get more flack over a "cartoon" which has a bigger "controversy" in selling a movie about kamikaze fighters; so they probably bought the larger rating.

If there's anything else, it's most likely the tuberculosis and the off-screen sexual encounter.

Fatt: Bet they didn't boycott that movie which looked at the lighter side of torturing people for trumped-up information, though, huh?

Best to not mention this to my Nana, she was alive when they bombed Pearl Harbor, and she's had a thing against the Japanese ever since then. It was only a couple of months ago that she finally started saying that some of the things I'm into are "cute". But mention planes and Japan, and she'll give you a lecture of a lifetime why America's the best country in the world.

No offense, but those kinds of people are the bane of my existence. First off, holding the entire modern Japanese population responsible for something that a previous generation did is completely ridiculous. Should we blame the modern German people for the Holocaust as well? Secondly, the Japanese attacked us with very good reason. We cut off their oil supply, which was extremely important for their economy. It's not like they bombed us for the hell of it. And finally, to consider us as the "greatest country in the world" is not only wrong, it's hypocritical. Our ancestors founded this nation on slavery and slaughtering the natives that had lived here for thousands of years.
Old people can be pretty stubborn, but have you at least brought up these facts for her? Also, why not try showing her films like Grave of the Fireflies? They at least show that we're not the only victims in war.
