I bought the first volume awhile ago and finally read through it the other day. Sped through it and I enjoyed it, so I wanted to pick up the other volumes. Online or in a store they'll mostly come out to 8-10 bucks a piece so I went to ebay just to browse.
First, bootlegs are the norm with anime, atleast on ebay, but what about manga? Anything to look out for? These both look right but besides buying either one, I needed an answer to this. On viz's site, there are 9 volumes and one seller is selling the 9 books but the other has a bunch of extra books. What are they? (maybe they're each chapter? just thought of that...in either case, I have no clue because I've bought and read very little manga) http://cgi.ebay.com/Battle-Angel-Alita-Lot-Viz-Manga-Yukito-Kishiro_W0QQitemZ140030846951QQihZ004QQcategoryZ3962QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem That's the link I'm questioning what they are. Thanks in advance. |

I'd say more than likely they're illegal copies. Compare their picture to this one, and you'll notice they're slightly different.

eh...I'd say those are individual chapter comics and not tankuobon. Legit, but not exactly what you're probably looking for.

Yeah, they look like individual comics to me, rather than the collected volumes.

Those are individual issues, not compilations, as the seller states in the description. The seller also says that they are bagged but not boarded, which is another indication that they are individual issues. As for for whether or not they're real or bootleg, the covers look somewhat familiar, but it's been years since I've seen them, I'm leaning towards real because of the numbering, that's how I remember them being released as singles. It would be the singles of the first five compilations, and the first 2 chapters of the 6th.

Exactly what I needed, thanks. I wasn't sure if the US put out single chapters or not...the other listing I had in ebay was for sure the entire 9 volumes so I'll go ahead and get that, thanks.

spoiler[ I think those other volumes are part of the Last Order storyline. They're an alternate path to Battle Angel's plot by taking the story in a different direction after Alita gets blown up by Desty Nova in volume 9 of the original manga. Personally, I liked the way the original manga ended so I deny the existence of the Last Order storyline entirely.]

Those are all the original issues that Viz released in "pamphlet" form.
I've never heard of a bootleg manga before. There'd be no point to bootlegging a commercially available manga because unlike DVD-Rs, which are cheap, paper is expensive, and unless you're doing a print run in the thousands it will cost you so much to print them that you'd have to sell them for MORE than cover price. Also, there are two runs of TPB collections out there: the first run was Viz's old style, which were slightly thinner but slightly larger and ran for $15.95 a piece, and the second is the standard 200-ish pages for $9.95 size. A lot of Viz's older series have been released in both versions like that. |

You'd probably just want to get the original volumes (By original I mean the 9.99 ones released by Viz). I'm up to volume 5 (haven't gotten a new one for a long time) but It's a really good series.

Well, to be fair, that story has been available in English for almost 10 years now, but yeah....spoiler space would have been nice. That comment doesn't spoil the entire ending, if that's what you're worried about.....and BAA: Last Order presents an all-new alternative ending, so there's always that. |
