Welcome to the official discussion thread for Jonathan Mays' new column, Sound Decision - the Internet's first anime soundtrack review column.
Feel free to discuss this week's picks, Jonathan's opinions, the column's odd color scheme... And pretty much, anything else related to the column.
Play nice, and have fun.

I bought Yuki Kajiura's Fiction and it is completely worth the $12 I spent on it. If you like the music from .Hack//Sign or Noir, then definitely get this CD. The songs from the anime were rerecorded for this CD. The songs from Noir, in particular, sounds completely different from their OST counterparts.
Of note, I know for a fact that this CD is available at Virgin Megastores because I saw it at two different locations.

How *much* different?
The word I've heard people using to describe the music on this CD is "remixes", which I rarely ever like.
I like a few new remixes of old songs (N Trance's mix of "Staying Alive", for example, lmao) and I actually really liked Linkin Park's Reanimation CD... But outside of that, I'm rarely ever happy with remixed versions of songs I like.
One recent example, which still makes me gag to think about, is the Kikuko Inoue Animetoonz CD. Gack. No variety to the mixing whatsoever - everything is slowed down and put to some tired old slow rock beat. IMO, they turned the Escaflowne opening song in particular from a pretty good song into absolute garbage. And anyway, I would just much rather have a collection of the original versions.
Would you say that Fiction is at least better than that? (Hoping against hope that you've heard Animetoonz?)

Ugh, yeah, I own Animetoonz. I said to myself, "One of my favorite seiyuu singing some of my favorite songs; how can it be bad?" Well, now I know...
The songs on Fiction are not remixes, in that sense. It's just not a techno beat overlaid on the original song. These are new arangements by Yuki Kajiura herself. One example is Fake Wings, Subaru's theme from .Hack//Sign. It has a string part that is not in the original OST version. Many, if not all (not sure on this), of the songs use a different vocalist, so some songs sound different because of this. An example of this is Slava Nos, which is much more operatic than the original Noir version. So, in short, they are really all the same songs, they just sound ... different.
Plus, only about half the songs on the CD are from anime. The rest are original. So, if you like her style of music, it's well worth the purchase. Hope this helps.

I'm an idiot for anime soundtracks, and now I'm kicking myself for not proffering up my services to ANN earlier. Dammit.
Yeah, the Chobits OST sucks on levels that far exceed many others (I imagine that Sugar's is worse). The only song I liked from the entire series was Ningyo Hime, and it's not even on this disc. Oh well...

Just to let people know, if you are looking for Duvet, you can also find it on the Lain: Cyberia Mix OST (last track) which is basically a remix album but is still very good IMO.

Right, but that's just the short one. I'm pretty sure the only way to get the full theme (vocal and instrumental) domestically is from the bôa CD.

I picked up Yoko Ishida's Sweets CD a couple of days ago. It's pretty good, except that the English version of "Sugar Baby Love" is horrible.

The best of Hikaru no Go is pretty sweet.
I am disappointed with my Naruto OST. Outta 20-some tracks, only about 3 are worth it.

I, for one, can't wait until Pioneer releases the Heat Guy J OST. It's an excellent mix of rock, techno and some bagpipe music on the side.
