Not long ago, I played Final Fantasy VII for the first time, and I have been thinking about something: is Sephiroth, the main villain of that video game, truly an evil person, or has he simply been given a negative reputation by other people? The reason that I aks this question is because I would like to see him as a hero, rather than a villain. I will attempt to support my argument with as much evidence as I can find, and I ask for the opinions of other people on this issue.
I believe that Sephiroth is still a good person because when he first appears in the game, he seems to be quite normal and decent. It was not until he read Dr. Gast's research that he began to slowly become evil. Although he was raised in an undoubtedly harsh environment, I feel that the evil acts he committed in the game were due to his being controlled by Jenova, and that he is not an evil person at heart. I cannot provide any more evidence than this, since the game does not give any, but I am certain that without Jenova's negative influence, Sephiroth would not have been an evil person.
I am certain that some people here will disagree with me, but I have seen numerous fan-fictions and other fan-created media that protray Sephiroth as a good person. I also shall reference the example of Darth Vader from the Star Wars movies. Darth Vader seemed to be a very evil charatcer throughout all three episodes of the original trilogy, but he was eventually redeemed at the end of Episode VI. I know that Sephiroth does not have anyone to whom he would be emotionally attached, the way that Darth Vader had Luke to save him, but I will not abandon hope that if he (Sephiroth) appears in a future Final Fantasy game, it will be as a hero, and not as a villain.
What does everyone else have to say on this subject?
