What encourages the anime makers in Japan to make a new season for any specific anime? And does buying anime merchandise and watching it on TV in a different country other than Japan counts to encouraging the anime makers to make a new season?

I believe that yea, merchandise selling and a demand over seas can be influential in regards to a 2nd season but it doesn't always really work because it depends on other factors more, i think. Whether the storyline was mapped out for only a season for example.

Cause for example people awaited a 2nd season of Cowboy Bebop and it still hasn't happened and look how long ago that was and Bebop is regarded as one of the best. The same situation with Trigun, another series that left fans wanting more. Fans have pleaded for a second season for a longtime now but alas that hasn't come true (though the OVA thing is different), so popularity isn't always a sure bet for a 2nd season.

Umm, ratings and a fanbase to support making that second season maybe? Sales with manga would help too, I would think.

as i said in another thread, Cowboy Bebop was originally slated to be only 13 episodes... so technically they did.

Don't forget that these shows were not nearly as big a hit in Japan as they were overseas. Its the japanese sucess that matters most of the time (there are some exceptions like Hellsing but its rare.)

Aside from that the anime industry doesnt appear to be particularly crazy about continuing stories that are over which really is quite great. Cowboy Bebop ended quite nicely for one, any more would just be greedy and unnecesary.

Anymore would make me disown the entire series, besides why would anyone want a second season to cowboy bebop...Spike is dead. For that matter I dont perticularlly like it when a story is played out for too long it really gets old (of course there are exceptions).

I think that if the ratings of an anime get so high, then they'll make a new season of that anime. DBZ had good ratings and it had some seasons. One Piece had good ratings in Japan and bad rating in the U.S (because of 4kids).

Well, i thinks its basicly when a show had unexpectedly or expectedly many viewers and there happened to be some story line left in the manga or source material. Its simply about the money.
