Have to wait till Friday to finally see my copy; but it'll be worth the wait! Not only is the show itself great, but Geneon (IMO) went above and beyond in the extras department. I've seen pics of what's included, but it definitely isnt the same as having them in your own hands.

I hadn't really heard much about this series, but after reading this review, I decided to go ahead and include the Vol. 1 + Box with a DDD order for some other stuff due out on the 6th. From the review, it kind of reminds me of Figure 17, only with a girl being a god rather than part of a fighting machine. Sounds like the dub is decent too, which only adds to the value.

I would have preferred that Geneon include the Japanese episode commentaries instead of the pencilboards, but the release is a good one for a great series. The box is beautiful. I (almost) can't wait for the rest of the DVDs, and am happy that the series'll be out by the end of the year. It'll be nice to able to read what's being said, after having watched the R2s, which I also bought. |

I have to agree, that this series is probably the most original piece of work that I have ever had the chance of viewing. With all the shows out there that you've seen, chances are you've seen some plot or other that is similar to another. Which isn't a bad thing mind you. But there comes a time when you are just looking for that "little something", and 'Kamichu' is it.
I remember coming across a small spot for it in 'Newtype USA' a good while back. The series was airing in at the same time 'Petopeto-san'. Two shows dealing with unique characters, engaging storyline with a taste for the supernatural that is VERY Japanese. I wasn't sure I was going to watch this show but decided on it. After watching ep. 4, found it very, if highly engaging and decided that I want it for myself. And yes, fans were saying that, "If Miyazaki did a tv series, this would be it." The show doesn't take itself too seriously, if anything I find it interestingly odd and funny at times. I mean, who ever heard of a girl one day waking up as a god, or spoiler[a god running away to become a rockstar or even better yet outsmarting the Japanese military to help an alien get back home to her true love.]. And again she's not doing super godly things with super godly powers that you normally see in anime shows. She's really still pretty normal, while just trying to figure things out. And I think that's what makes it work. It's nto the output it's what you get out of it. 
There was an article in April's issue (2006) of Newtype USA where they talked with the director about the project. It's worth reading if you get the chance. As the talks about how they came up with the idea and team to work on the series. They couldn't have picked a better team (R.O.D OVA, R.O.D TV, manga) to be involved. I later began to look at this show in a different light. That's when it later dawned on me, that the series sort of reminds me of those little odd live-action stories that you see on TV or read in children's books. It's got that type of flavor. I could see 'Kamichu' being made into a live-action series. Kamichu, is a slice-of-life story. So people that crave crazy psycho-psionic powers, supernatural gun-toting action, panty raids, mecha, hyperbole, etc, etc... will have to look elsewhere. This show is not for you unless you dear to indulge into the lighthearted and down-to-earth, school girls doing girl stuff.  Definitely a series that all ages can enjoy. I highly recommend it!

Well, that does it. I'm checking this out. All I've encounted of Kamichu! before this review was a short clip from the first episode, brilliantly animated by Tetsuya Takeuchi (who also did the incredible animation in epidose 7 of Honey and Clover). With those impressive visuals and now Carlo's blessing, I don't see how this could possibly be a bad purchase.

Gods and Devils... isn't that what 6/6/06 is all about?
Does anyone know if this series has a solid ending? Just a simple "yes" or "no" will be enough. I'm sorry if it ruins it for others, but I'm not ready to spend money on another series that shows promise, just to make me feel like I wasted my money at the end. I guess a better question would be if Kamichu! continues it's greatness past volume 1? |

Are you asking if there's a definite story-can't-go-any-further conclusion? Yurie's only in junior high. She's got a lot of life left ahead of her, so I can't say that the conclusion was definite in that respect. Are you asking if she manages to confess to Kenji? ... still has her kami status at the end? ... takes over the world? ... wins an election to be top kami? While I'd love to see more Kamichu created (it might be fun to see her in high school, or how she does post-high school), I enjoyed what was produced, and I don't feel desperate for more.
I'm still happy that I purchased the R2 DVDs after watching them, and am now getting Geneon's release (damn them, and their Geneon Lottery, though ;p ). The technical quality stays excellent throughout the show, but there are a couple of episodes that are a bit slow (even quieter slices of life than usual). There's an episode that I'm really looking forward to seeing translated, but I can't recall if it'll be on the third DVD or the fourth. ^_^ Buy it! ^_- |

Well, I just watched vol 1 today. What a wonderfull, touching show! I too, had never heard of this show until about 2 weeks ago. With all the positive feedback, it sparked my curiosity. As soon as I read about the comparisons to Spirited Away, I was sold.
I'm so glad I got this. I love to take a break from the action & just sit back, relax, and be entertained(and in a few cases, moved). Kudos to Geneon for bringing over titles that break from the usual, cookie-cutter genres. Last year they brought us Koi Kaze. This year...Kamichu!

I bought KamiChu! Vol. #1 last weekend (and I apologize in advance if I'm necroposting) and needless to say I agree with Carlo’s review of this DVD. It definitely has a Spirited Away feel to it, and I'll forgive the lip-flaps (which wasn’t mentioned in the review) as long as the English acting continues to be as stellar as it was in Vol. #1. The animation and backgrounds are simply gorgeous; might be the best-looking anime series I've watched since Texhnolyze (and that does include Gilgamesh, which also has beautiful artwork). As for the dub, I definitely love Megan Harvey's Yurie; very sweet and sincere, and enjoyable to listen too, just like her performance as Hisa in R.O.D. Looks like it's safe to say that we may see more lead roles for Ms. Harvey in the near future. She definitely has the talent to take a lead character and turn in a masterful performance. The rest of the cast's performances sound very good as well, and I'm quickly turning into a Lulu Chiang fan. Save for the lip-flaps, excellent directing work by Patrick Seitz thus far in this series. This gets my vote for DVD of the year right now.

Kamichu! is the front-runner right now for sleeper anime hit of the year, most definitely. I'm glad I got to experience it, and hope others can get past the "cute" factor, which, in all honesty isn't that much save for a pink alien and kittycat.
My favorite god so far is the God of Empty Cans, pushing them around.
