It's a shame to see that such a large number of people "have no interest in renting anime". Joining Animenation's RentAnime program, and eventually Netflix, may be the best things I've ever done for myself. My anime expertise has grown exponentially and I have discovered many new series that I probably would not have discovered if I only consumed the anime I could afford to buy.
To break down the costs and benefits: My Netflix queue alone tells me that in roughly 13 months of membership I have rented 72 DVDs. Taking into account the fact that I've changed plans several times over the course of the year, and estimating that I've spent and average of $15/mo for the subscription (pretending I've had a 2-disc unlimited plan all along as opposed to alternating between 1 and 3)... that's some $200. Purchasing DVDs with that amount of money, you'd get somewhere between 7 and 10 discs. I think that's saying a lot. ...although, I suppose its possible that all those people have "no interest in renting anime" because they're immoral leeches who know how and feel no qualms about downloading all the anime I'm currently seeing via Netflix for free... hadn't considered that... On that subject, the other day my friend was watching Getbackers on his PSP. He asked if I was currently watching anything, I said no because I don't work anymore and don't have the money to follow series like I used to. He replyed; "You Buy Anime? Nobody I Know Buys Anime. I just download it."
If a hardcore gamer downloads anime, I imagine anime fans would too. |

I don't rent anime because I'm really lazy and often don't get around to watching the anime I buy right away. Like about half of the DVDs I have I haven't watched. I watch them kind of randomly. Maybe if I was a little more timely in watching anime I'd consider it but I don't think that's going to happen. I do download fansubs also though but that's not the reason I don't rent.

I had to choose "no interest" by default. I used to rent anime heavily from video stores from '97 to '04, but now I no longer live near a video store and no longer have one near work so I stopped bothering. I get my anime fix now from buying DVDs, watching on TV, and fansubs. Couldn't help but notice the more stuff that was showing up on TV the less I was renting. Cable really changed my renting habits.

Unfortunately (for the anime industry) a lot of fans download anime as an alternative to buying it. And yeah, that whole group doesn't rent much either. Even more unfortunate for the rental shops, the fans that use fansubs for previews and do actually buy anime after previewing it, still have no need for rentals because they get their previews for free. And of course, when the VOD market finally matures and the infrastruture is capable of offering huge libraries of titles all simultaneously available, I think that will pretty much be the death of retals. But that's still years off. -t |

There should be a 'both online and in mortar store' option on the poll. I'm a member of Blockbuster.com, so I rent online, but when I was at school I also rented from a local place that specialized in renting anime.

I used to think that you could only rent anime in big cities where they had more selection, but I think our local Blockbuster has acquired a decent amount of movies (such as Akira and Ghilbli films).

Renting is to me very convenient, because then I don't have to buy an anime and then find out that it's not what I'm looking for. So I like renting. The only thing is that I don't rent online, because I'm a little lazy in that section Blockbuster YEAH!!

This is why I said I'm not interested in renting. I would like to view other things that seem vaguely interesting, but I'm really just too lazy. Plus, I already have a shelf of unwatched anime. Some are recent, a couple from Christmas, many from before that and there's even a movie I picked up for $2-4 from 4-5 years ago. I don't know why I'm backlogged. I want to watch the series I have... I don't really understand why I don't. |

For me, renting isn't worth the hassle...although I have considered renting as a piracy avenue (rent+rip+burn=cheap anime), if I really want to see a series, I'll buy it. If it's one of those, "might be OK but not that great" series, I'll download it. Still, my money often winds up with the industry in the end, as I can count 20+ series that I own on DVD that I had previously owned illegally (bootleg, fansub, DVD-rip).

I just want to point out to all those people who said they have no interest in renting... arn't you the ones who complain about how expensive the DVDs are? Now that the rental sites (I use netFlix) are getting cheaper and cheaper you don't really have a reason to complain about it. Also, this goes for downloaders too, DONT COMPLAIN ABOUT PRICE WHEN YOU DONT BUY ANY!

We offer rentals (brick & mortar) as a service to fans and the community. As I tell people, it's better that you send $3 to find out you don't like a series as opposed to $30.
I am sure that piracy has happened. Most people don't watch an entire series in a 1 or 2 day span. But I figure it happens in Blockbuster just as much. Besides, I probably wouldn't have been able to sell them the series anyway, so it's better I get $3 a disc out of them to put toward my lease and buying more DVDs for the rental shelves. |

Usually, when I rent anime at all, I rent it from Merivale Blockbuster (or, occasionally, Prince of Wales Blockbuster, near the Hog's Back Locks), but I've been considering getting a rental membership for the Comic Book Shoppe, which is within walking distance (though a bit further than Blockbuster).
I can't rent online because I don't have a credit card, and, even if there are other payment options, I don't have enough money coming in for me to sign up for anything unnecessary that I'd have to commit to paying for monthly. Plus, RentAnime.com doesn't do Canada. And I like the visceral feel of browsing physical copies of stuff (which is why I doubt I'd bother with broadband download services) and the exercise I get walking to and from the video store, which is a pleasant late evening stroll. |

I know what you guys mean. I barely got around to watching the X TV Series that has been sitting there since the Bailey Box was released. There are still a couple of others I need to watch too. I also rent movies and anime from Blockbuster, but sometimes return them without watching them. |

I rent from blockbuster online. They don't have everything, and i was about to start renting a series when I realized they were missing a DVD or something, but overall they have a good selection.
I'm not going to buy an anime before I watch it just because it costs too much to do that, so I try to rent as much as I can. I avoid downloading fansubs as much as I can unless 1) it hasn't been licensed yet or 2) blockbuster doesn't have it (or the whole thing...but they usually do). For one, I just dont have the diskspace to download multiple series of 5 or 6 gigs each. Second....its just wrong. The blockbuster store near where I am has qutie a few movie titles, but they don't really have any complete series. lIke they have evangelion volume 1, or volumes 2 and 3 of another series, etc. I'll rent movies from there but not series. By the way, if anyone is interested, the series I am currently renting from blockbuster are His and Her Circumstances, Cowboy Bebop, Cardcaptor Sakura, and DearS (quite a few different titles there). |
