It is actually not a prequel to Donnie Yen's Ip Man franchise. There were three separate movies based on the life of the Grandmaster made during 2010, and this is just one of them, unrelated to Donnie Yen's franchise. In fact, because of the over saturation, Donnie Yen turned down Ip Man 3. Funi shouldn't advertise that it's a prequel. :/
