Do they usually post them at midnight? Where I am right now, it isn't April 1st though (still 15 more minutes).

Well it's 2:55 am 4/1/06 and nothing just yet. Either I didn't notice something, or your getting lazy ANN crew.

Okay... a post about not having an April fools joke as soon as it is midnight IN YOUR area... Quack Quack.
I haven't been here long enough for an April Fools joke. I love EGM April Fools Jokes though. I actually thought there was a remake of the Wind Waker... those bastards.

Seeing as most of people who are in charge of things here on ANN are located in US, I think now would be a rather odd time to post it. I mean it's a little after midnight where I am and I think it's like 2am or 3am on the East coast. Even though we're up I don't think they're going to get up in the middle of the night to post a news article (one that's just for fun and doesn't really serve any purpose either). The only ANN staff I ever see on at this time are dormcat, Nagisa, and Tony K. and I don't think any of them have the power to post any news articles. I'd say wait another 6 or 7 hours before saying there won't be any April Fools jokes.

There aren't going to be any April Fools shenanigans this year. We of the staff had a discussion about it and a majority agreed that ANN's reputation made it improper for us to do something of that nature, given how easily postings on a well-known site like ours could be misconstrued as truth. (No matter how ridiculous it might sound, you know someone would believe it and start spreading it around.)
And yes, if something like that was going to happen, it would have been up right at midnight E.S.T. Sorry to disappoint, guys. |

I had a feeling you guys won't do it. The posts from the non-forum goers and noobs from last year were painfully ridiculious and totally no fun.

It's kind of disappointing that there won't be an April Fool's joke, but I can understand and the joke would've been ruined by this thread anyway because now everybody would've already realized it's April Fool's Day.

Problem is, the best April Fools jokes are the ones people believe.
However, ANN absolutely can't be in the position where it is propagating falsehoods. Not any more at least. So the only option left are unbelievable April Fools jokes. Things that are funny, but not convincing. Last year we did that. The general opinion of the editorial staff this year was that it was best not to have any jokes, and that they made the site look bad. If not in your eyes, then in someone elses. Sorry. To a degree, we're all some what dissapointed about this decision, but felt that it was for the best. The possibility that the April Fools jokes will return in the future remains. I have a particular joke in mind, that if it ever becomes possible to use, will be very much in the true spirit of April Fools and will not go against the serious news image of this site in any way. If the chance to use this joke ever presents itself, we'll use it. -t |

Well the server was down for awhile and later I couldn't get on to the forums, so I guess that could be classified as a "funny event"

I was one of the sticks-in-the-mud who voted against April Fool's jokes, on the grounds that:
1) if ANN wants to be taken seriously as a news site, we can't spread deliberate disinformation, and 2) if we ran any stories that were remotely likely to be true, they'd instantly be propagated all over the net, because there's always somone foolish enough to pass on a "juicy" story without looking at a calendar first. Of course, looking at Slashdot, I'm beginning to think that either we need not have concerned ourselves, or Slashdot has given up all hope of being taken even the slightest bit seriously.

Personally, I think the whole "fake news on april fool's day!" thing is so overdone as to not really be all that funny anymore. Every site on the internet does it and it's not so gut-bustingly hilarious that it's worth the 400 emails over the next 3 months from people asking me if those stories were true or not.
It was pretty funny in 2001, but to stick to something simply because of tradition and not because we actually have something really hilarious to post is kinda backwards, IMO. |
