Hey there,
I was interested on picking up school rumble and I was wondering if there was lots of Fan-Service and nudity in it. Does anybody know what it is rated? Thanks, Azumangaman |

In terms of fanservice content, the most you'll see is girls in bikinis, nothing more risque than that. There might be some panty/cleavage action but I don't remember.

I saw a few episodes of the anime, and I wouldn't expect anything worse than some bikini shots. If there is any blood, it would be a result of someone getting hurt from an accident. |

The anime is pretty tame. Aside from the obvious bikini wardrobe when they go to visit the beach, there were little to no panty shots or anything of that nature (maybe a towel wrapped around here and there, or maybe even a bra).
There were a few breast closeups with "bouncing" sound effects, but it was all for the sake of comedy and to expose the personality of a particular male character who likes D-cups ![]() As for blood, there was a little bit of that as well. But again, it was for the sake of comedy (i.e. nosebleeds, slapstick humor, etc.). It's pretty basic stuff. I would say it's very inoffensive, unless you're just really strict on those kinds of things. |

me too. i trust del rey overall and the hype from School Rumble is pretty strong and consistent. i'll probably get Air Gear too just based on the love this series gets!
no review, editorial or company can hype a series as much as fanboys showing love for it |

And considering some of the shit fanboys/girls love, I really wouldn't trust over-the-internet hype unless I've heard about the series from a reliable source. As for School Rumble, hopefully I can borrow it off someone I know because Del Rey's shonen titles haven't been the strongest. |

If you don't want generic slapstick unrealistic love/comedy show, than skipped School Rumble and don't believe the hype. I seen bits of the anime and the character were very annoying because they seem go out of their way to act stupid just make you laugh. It's a very "wacky" and weird type show.
The typical fanboy will love these type of series like they did with love hina and find it funny, especially if it's like their first comedy story and they get to see all these "crazy japanese" quirkiness, but I thought the comedy here didn't work and didn't even make me laugh. And I like comedy type manga. Last edited by darkhunter on Sat Jan 28, 2006 5:56 am; edited 1 time in total |

The manga is worth a buy, although I feel that many of the jokes and situations came off better when animated.
"Seen bits" is definitely the key phrase here. While I agree the first episodes were not that special I think your harsh words are uncalled for since School Rumble improves a lot. From initially focusing on Tenma, Harima and Karasuma the side characters get more and more time in the spotlight, which leads to some really interesting relationship constellations later on. Everything from humor to drama moves on to a higher level. I've seen my fair share of anime comedies and none of them are like School Rumble. |

i get what you're saying because you don't see me buying "Berserk" or "Battle Royale or "Blame" because I don't dig that type of manga. so no matter what the hype is, forget it... i totally dig silly, romantic manga with a lil bit of fan service. Love Hina, Ai Yori Aoshi, Nodame Cantibile, Love Roma are all in the vein of School Rumble... and so I know the peeps on this forum who like the same manga will hype up the good books. for instance... I am hyping Love Roma. I LOVE this book, go check this out! |

As do I to a degree, except I enjoy Love Roma and Nodame far, far more than Love Hina, whereas Ai Yori Aoshi falls somewhere in the middle (though it really doesn't count because its humor isn't very funny). While Love Hina recieves tons of hype and has a strong fanbase, I found it mediocre, repetative and eventually downright stupid. Love Roma on the other hand came out of no-where as one of the best romantic-comedies (one that actually funny with out having to resort to the "guy slipps and falls in girl's breasts" punchline) in a long time. Of course, Nodame is huge in Japan and I can see why. So what I'm saying is that hype is unpredictable, and I'll have to Judge School Rumble based on what I read. |

Well the first 6 episode or 1/4 of the series was really...let just say wacky for the sake of being wacky. I was reading the review over at animenfo, beside all the typical fanboy praise review, there were actually some review that gave "mediocre" rating with some good reasoning and critical points in which I agree upon. And I thought those mediocre rating were more well written and more thorough than most of the fanboy raving review. It all depend on the humor, so you have to find the character to be pretty funny. I thought a lot of the character were very unrealistic, thus making the comedy pretty unreliable. I probably wouldn't hate it so much if it wasn't so overhype (like Mai Hime). Maybe it does get better later on and I haven't seen enough of it to really judge it, but when it comes to "love" type comedy, the less wackier and more realistic storyline, the better. I don't really like Azumanga & Love Hina and these are what most fan consider the apex of comedy/drama series. ![]()

Well, it really just comes down to your own personal preferences of what you consider to be a good "mix" of comedy and romance. I'd like to try and explain why I like School Rumble, but after seeing how hype can sort of cloud peoples' perceptions, it seems a bit futile.
Needless to say, though, I know how you feel when that sort of hype can be taken as "unworthy praise" or something to the degree of "this is it? OK, now what?" I'm not quite sure what causes that sort of reaction in people, but I'm sure there's a way to overcome it if you look hard enough. I guess if you can learn to tune everything out, be disciplined, and watch whatever it is for your own personal sake, while giving your own honest opinion (again, tuning out the hype), it might be a little easier to enjoy or dislike that said target based on whatever criteria you have. I know it's hard to do, believe me. For years I've been trying to get over the hype of Evangelion and the praise of a "certain company" that dubs it. But, ultimately, if you can't find that resolution for whatever reason (like me), and it seems to be a gut feeling more than anything else, so be it. Don't force yourself to like something just because everyone else likes it too and move on, and maybe someday, by chance, you'll just get lucky and stumble upon the answer ![]() |

For new school fans, yeah. For the more well-read fans, Maison Ikkoku tends to go at that apex. But you're right. School Rumble is a throwback to the "gonzo" comedies of the early '80s such as Urusei Yatsura, Sasuga no Sarutobi, You and Me, and especially Chikyuu Kenritsu Boueigun (Prefectural Earth Defense Force). It's overly melodramatic for comic effect, puns fly, plenty of obscure references, and every character seems to have some oddity. Frankly, I really miss those and am happy to see one come back and be successful after years of manga where the characters play table-top games in tournaments (not that there's anything wrong with that...). |
