So the year is coming to a close and there have been tons of new title release in 2005 such as FMA, NANA, BECK, Eden, Sexy Voice & Robo, Monkey King, Love Roma, Telapathic Wanderer, Genshiken and more. From the 2005 titles you read so far, what title do you think was the best new title of this year (limit is 3)? Also be sure to list reason why you think it's the best among the other candidates even if it's the only new title you pick up in 05.
Best New title:
3. BECK - A title about Rock music and it's one of the best of the year. While the setup is very typical: a boring guy get into a hobby that change his life, the execution is pull of flawness with nice pacing and interesting character interaction. The humor comes off naturally even if it's subtle.
2. Genshiken - We don't get a lot of stories about otaku so Genshiken is a rare title. A lot of inside jokes, shelf reflection and geekiness to go around. Genshiken is a title that most fan can relate to and just watching a many club activities but it's also a great comedy watching otaku acting a fool. It's almost like Revenge of the Nerd, otaku-style.
1. EDEN - Darkhorse came out of no where and release an post-apocalypse sci-fi Akira killer---well not quite. Eden is still a deep philospical tale with a lot of great ideas and shocking moments. While the pace it slow, it takes it time to develope and let the reader take in all the detailed art.

The title that came out this year that I was most looking forward to, and which met my expectations and then some, was Fushigi Yuugi:Genbu Kaiden. Watase Yuu is my favourite manga-ka and I was really looking forward to seeing her continue the series which was her big breakthrough. And she did it better than I would have imagined, making it completely different from the original Suzaku/Seiryuu story. And it's also nice to get anything recent from Watase, because her art is just so beautiful.

i agree with the topic starter about beck and genshiken. they are both amongst my all time favorite manga, not just within 2005. some of the aspects in genshiken are so dead on, i cant help but love this series. and as a musician, beck is great. harold sakuishi didn't write a half assed story, all the references to real life musicians. the instrument drawings and just the plot itself are great. the third best manga of this year to me, is a desicion between nodame cantabile or cromartie high school. it all depends on my mood. nodame cantabile is light and well written, i enjoy the art as well. and cromartie high school is one of the funniest manga out.

MY TOP 3 of 2005:
Beck — music manga as the first guy described..
Love Roma — This is a slice of life comic and to describe it... The character confesses his love in the first panel. No "I's" bullcrap, no mystery, no angst — JUST FUN! I think this title is funny, interesting, and I have been waiting for vol 2 since forever. If you love Love Hina and other harem or angst-ridden love manga, try this. This is absolutely not a harem manga or angst-ridden love manga, but it's a great change of pace for us who love them!
Genshiken — otaku lifestyle manga. interesting and surprisingly funny. like this a lot because it's original
nodame cantibile — art looks shoujo but it feels very cool to me in the same way as the others. the story is funny and sweet and the characters are endearing. college music students find themselves after meeting each other and blossoming musically...

3. Genshiken - It's not only a great series as a comedy about otaku, but it's such a deep series that really gets into the individual parts of the fandom. I think everyone who reads it will come away with a different experience, simply because it covers such a vast part of fandom.
2. Death Note - Just judging on the first two volumes that came out in '05, I really felt it was worth the hype. (I don't think I'll count volume three, even though I've read it and enjoyed it just as much as the first two) I had such a difficult time putting both of these books down, since I couldn't wait to see who would get the upper hand next. Not to mention the artwork is . I love Obata-sensei.
1. Yotsuba&! - I knew I was going to end up saying this was the best series of the year after just the first book, but books 2 & 3 were even better, so any worries I may have had were thrown out the window. The humor is so sharp and spot on, and every joke has something going for it. Not only is it a great comedy, but it's also packing a lot of charm. I really feel Yotsuba comes off as more than a manga character, and more like a next door neighbor. I'm also very happy to think that Azuma-sensei has topped himself in every single way, and topping Azumanga Daioh wasn't a small feat, I don't think.

The manga market was suprisingly good in 2005. A more diverse range of titles were released and overall the quality of most genres improved. There were tons of titles I loved like Yotsuba&!, Blue Spring, Eden, Nana and BECK, but if I had to pick my top three, they would be
3.Love Roma by Minoru Toyoda-This could just be the perfect romantic comedy. No other manga I've read has ever managed to maintain equal parts humor and endearment. With the cartoony artwork and snappy dialogue, Love Roma easily bests the vast majority of titles the overdonw genre has to offer with wacky (but suprisingly smart) humor and a wonderful tale of young people working through first love.
2.Blue by Nananan Kiriko-Not only is this haunting drama the second best title of the year, it's also the most overlooked. I wouldn't be suprised if this is the worst selling manga released in 2005, and that makes it all the more bittersweet knowing how good it is. A strikingly mature tale of first love from one of Japan's most acclaimed female manga-ka, it tells the story of Kayako, a highschool girl who befriends the outsider of the class, Endo, and eventually their friendship blossoms into deep love. But don't label this as yuri or "hot schoolgirl on schoolgirl action"; that would be like calling Brokeback Mountain gay porn. Blue isn't so much about romance as it is about going into the characters lives. With a cinematic style Kiriko dives deep into the characters desires and passions as they deal with issues ranging from sex to their futures. Blue is tragically beautiful, and simply unforgettable.
1.Sexy Voice and Robo by Iou Kuroda-Is there really anyway to accurately describe this manga? As Patchu pointed out in his review, Sexy Voice defies categories, so I'm not even going to try to explain it. What I will tell you is that it's Iou Kuroda showing just how damn good he is. In these four hundred-or-so pages he tells gripping thrillers, gentle dramas, wackly love stories and everything in between. With an untouchable art style he paints a rich portrait of modern Tokyo filled with wonders and populated by some of the best characters you'll ever see in a manga. Add to that the attractive format and exellent adaptation (done by the lovely and talented Kelly Sue DeConnick), there's no reason why I can't give Sexy Voice the top spot. One of those things that just has to be experienced to be understood.

1.Death Note - as said, its just not like any other SJ title out there. let alone the fact in japan, its ribbled abit of controversy. being a fan crazy Psychoalgical thrillers, and Japanese Horror films, this is truely Awesome, and Highly recomended
2. Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden - bemyself being a HUGE frickin' fan of Watase-Sensei this was a major look forward to. funny as the original, and maybe just heartbreaking *weep* So check it just as a Shojo fan.
3. Fullmetal Alchemist - Yes Yes FMA as starting out its very much similar to the show but as I've heard it takes a diffrent turn later on. Plus thing are even different in the begining but still you love the show as much as I this won't fail to excite.

I haven't really read a lot of 2005 releases but I guess I'll list the three I have enjoyed the most:
Fullmetal Alchemist: I enjoy the manga as much as the anime. They both have big differences so you can get two different experiences. There's just a really touching premise underneath it all. The urge to bring back something lost that can never be returned. I also thought the manga was at times funnier and at times more serious than the anime. If that makes sense? Great manga!
Cromartie High School: While not much to look at art-wise, the humor of this really connects with me. I am a big Queen fan and it's just so funny to see Freddie in that comic. Because he was so blatantly flamboyant in real life. I couldn't stop laughing in Volume 1 when the students set up a trap for the gorilla and it turns out that the gorilla is smarter than them! And what can I say about Mechazawa...he's the man!....or the robot.....or whatever.
UltraManiac: Yeah, that's right, a magical girl manga...or not. Don't judge this manga by its anime version. There isn't a magical costume change sequence every chapter and a backflip onto a magical scooter. In fact, she doesn't even wear a costume. The manga is more subtle and plays more like a school comedy/drama. The relationships between the characters are a lot more complex.

This is a rather Difficult decision for me. However, my top 3 Manga of 2005 are:
3. Eyeshield 21: This hillarious, character and sport driven manga has kept me laughing and on the edge of my seat all through the first 5 volumes. All I need to do is wait for vol.6, due out in Feburary. *A love of football isn't neccesary. Although I love football, I find enough interest in the humor and characters.*
2. Trigun/ Trigun Maximum: Although the manga started long before 2005, this is a phenomenal series. Incredible action and a deep, deep, depressing plot keep you interested-and hooked- forever!
1. Yotsuba&!: Easily the best of '05. This doesn't take much consideration, considering the most loveable characters to ever exist are here in this manga. This (dare I say it) outdid the Azumanga Daioh anime. This is one of those titles that realluy justifies it's ALL rating! I REALLY REALLY REALLY HOPE THAT ADV MANGA DOESN'T CANCEL THIS! BECAUSE IF THEY DO, HERE COME THE ANGRY LETTERS!
