How is it? I know it's supposed to be far superior from the anime but how is the translated manga? It can't be any worse than the show but is it also heavily edited?

Viz owns the license for the One Piece manga; so no, it's not heavily edited as far as I can tell. Pretty much everything that was in the original is still there; nothing has really been cut out; at least not to the extent that 4Kids has done to the anime.

Aside from a few name changes (Zoro, Going Merry, and I believe some attacks may have been altered to fit with 4Kids' namings), it's a pretty straight translation. I don't believe any of the artwork has been touched up or changed thus far. At least, I can't find any instances of that happening.

i sort of started out "kind of liking" this series but i started reading the manga and now i am hooked. i don't normally buy books like this. i prefer books like love hina/ ai yori aoshi and at the very least ranma 1/2. HOWEVER, i think i may start buying this book even though i know how harrowing a 30+ volume manga series can be.
the main reason is i think it has tremendous heart to it. good emotion and all that. the cartoon is good, the manga is better. this book was built for a younger audience, so there is not much to edit. the mangaka does not put anything that would make censors nuts in this series.

the manga has much more "emotion" in it than the anime. the anime is not terrible IMO though

Yes, although I'm not sure what else you would call it and still have it make sense to English readers?
The attacks also follow the Gum Gum... pattern and not the Gomu Gomu no... pattern, which, again, is the right choice in my eyes.

You'd rather have Gomu Gomu no for the attacks? You do know that it's being translated in English right?

Read what I said carefully.
I'm saying it's better because it's Gum Gum.

I do love the One Piece manga quite alot. I can deal with the name changes because they didn't change any of the content (as far as i know). speaking of which, does anyone know if they've changed any of the content? i'd really like to know. thanks if you answer and thanks if you don't

i've managed to read up to volume 26 (don't ask me how), and I have yet to see anything really that requires "editing". nobody really dies, so the fight scenes are exciting while not being "explicit".
plus, there is no sex and no kissing even. the most i've seen is nami in a bikini or in the bath with everything covered up. IMO, nami's chest does get bigger througout the series. haha!
