Now First off I am new here and just figured I would say HI. But at the same time the last thing I wanted to do was post one of those useless threads just telling you all about me, so I will post a question too.
First off I am in the Air Force and I am soon to be 21 years old. I am over in the desert away from all forms of anime society so when I found this web site I almost cried if it wasn't a girly thing to do.....Yeah thats it. I like to think I am a laid back guy who has alot of intrest and hobbies. I am a new age hybrid aka a jock mixed with a dork. I was raised mostly in MA but then my family moved to RI when I was in Highschool. I am normally stationed up in Anchorage Alaska. I will be there for a few more years and if you are near that area maybe we can kick it some time. Oh well feel free to ask me anything anytime I am more than open about myself and what I do and like. Now what you all are reading this for, the question where you can throw in your two cents. Are you, or do you know anybody who is a Closet Anime Fan? Just to clearify a closet Anime Fan is someone who loves anime, watches it, but isn't proud of the fact. Like they don't go around talking about it, or making thier friends watch it. Ya know something like that. Now I am sad to say I use to be one. At first when I started getting into it I was dabbiling in it during highschool. Then right after it ended I dove in hardcore and ofcourse joined the military. That is when I would bring it up occasionally but not for a long time into it. BUT I HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT!!! HALLIULLEA I AM SAVED!!!! I am no longer a closet fan and I am embrace it freely. That is why I am part dork. Ok well feel free to tell your stories about you or anyone you know. |

First off welcome, and I hope you return home safely.
As for closet anime fans, I was one once. When I first started watching about 6 years ago, I didn't really tell anyone because I didn't want pepole to think I was still a child. I was 13 (do the math. How old am I now?) and trying to be cool. Cartoons wernt cool for 13 year old boys in my area. So, when I could, I would sit in my room and watch my anime by myself. Then when I made it to HS, I found a few other fans and finally opend up about my fandom. Now, everone who knows me knows I'm a fan and they dont lauugh at me or call me a dork. In fact, I've converted a few of them myself. |

Hi. I'm definately not a closet anime fan and never was. I am very open about being an anime fan with my friends and family. Although out in public most people wouldn't be able to tell I'm an otaku. I never even bring it up in public unless someone asks what my interests are. I guess I'm kind of lucky, I've never had anyone make fun of me for liking it before, despite how so many people talk about people making fun of them for liking it.

I'm not exactly "closet", but, at the same time, I don't go around bothering people who don't care and wouldn't likely ever care about anime.

Welcome to the forums! I hope you enjoy your stay here! I tried being open about my interest in anime before but most people thought I was weird and they didn't seem interested in it, so now I keep it mostly to myself expect for my close friends who I know also like anime and my family who already knows about my interest in anime. I'm still a closet fan around my family when it comes to certain series I like though, like Pokemon, Yugioh, and Digimon, because I'm afraid of being made fun of for liking "kiddy" shows like those. But I'm more open about my interests in those particular anime shows around my friends because some of them like those shows too, and if they don't they never make fun of me for liking them. But when it comes to people who aren't my friends who I know definetly don't like anime or don't even know what it is, I keep it to myself because I don't want to be made fun of for liking something that most people view as being dorky or childish.

Hey thanks for the quick and may I dare say it.......WARM welcome? LOL I crack myself up sometimes anyway Yeah I know what you mean I use to play football in Highschool and then go home and kick it with my neighbor and watch anime. SO yeah closet would be a nice way to say it. I have never been made fun because I like it because as soon as they say something along the lines of "But its a cartoon" I respond with "Ok find me a cartoon where there is this much blood, sex and perverted humor?" Yeah the point normally goes across and makes them go ummmmm ok. I love making doubters and non believers shut up, Its a great feeling. Plus Anime is a show that can do so much more than other shows, why there animated. Damn why is anime so awsome?

Some of my family know that i see anime,but it's mostly my friends that know i see anime.my mother and father also know too.so i'm somewhat of a closet fan,i don't go around talking about anime to people i don't know.

I'm a closet anime fan. Wooo.
Well, I watch all my anime with my older brother (I'm 17, he's 20) and a couple of Ghibli films with an extremely reluctant friend but that's it. I don't particular want to 'seek out a community' (unless it's online =P), I think it'd be better if you were friends with somebody before sharing anime with them. I'd hate having people who I only have anime in common with. I'm gay and my friends are mainly girls; so their favourite TV shows are things like Sex and the City, and they'd never get the head around cartoons for an older audience. Closest to that is Disney; but only things with Princesses count. I think I prefer it with just my bruv... =P Other than this site though I've never really tried an anime forum; closest was the forum on GFAQs. I didn't like that too much though; as I don't download anime and find it hard to keep up with all their topics. But, first post here wooo! Hopefully I'll meet some friends.. =D |

hmmm i'm a bit different,
i'm pretty open as in i wear anime tshirts and i openly say out loud what i like, but i'm so affected what my other friends like i tend to not yell out thinks like "I think this character is SOOO hot!" or "That series was the best in the world!" ^^; i'm a bit scared that someone will go "That was stupid! why do you like it? " i can easily defend myself, it it werent the fact i don't want to anger my friend (s) |

Hey SHIRO its def cool too not want to offend your friends, but if you don't voice your opinion how will your friends know whats going on in your life? I mean if lets just say you find a char hot in a show, Take any of the ladies from Love HIna say it outloud I think it is perfectly allowed.

Being ex-military and still around the military community I come across alot of people who have the wrong impression of what anime is; do you get this as well? They thinks it's mainly hentai with little girls being tentacle raped and such. It get's me going on about what it really is; it helps to have a Newtype or Anime Insider magazine handy. You have to be out of the closet to set the world straight on it if it's your hobby. Hey, I'm addicted!!

haha well i'm a reclusive person when it comes to saying things like that because I'm sorta used my family picking at things like that and i've always been raised in a way that seems to make me feel uncomfortable about even saying things like "i have a crush on somebody" (like a real person) btw i'm a girl =D (i need some way to show that because my username is so uhh... genderless...) another main reason is because i just can't choose! i like different characters for different reason =D i'm such an indesicive person. I sometimes also hide the fact i may like series that many bash constantly (like yuugioh which i feel that its undeserved because of how it was handled in the u.s.) so sometimes i tend to be reserved |

Well you are who you are SHIRO can't really change that though. I me just cause your a girl doesn't mean you have to be shy. You can be flirtious and at the same time you can be honest. Like what ya want to like and do what ya want to do. See I stopped being a closet anime fan and now no one and I mean no one can make fun of me, plus the fact that I am 6'3 and weight 240, and like to fight normally backs me up on the whole no insult catergory. Like I have read and liked alot of stuff that most people think could be weird. I am a overall interesting person. I could care less.
Now for liking many things and not liking one thing, if your like me at all thats primarily due to the fact that you have a short attention span and a mind that wants to cover many things to keep it happy. I am so with you on that. Ok bye bye now. |

But ya, I was never a closet Anime fan.. I had been watching it since I was little ( The childrens animes like Littl' bits etc ) So for me it was an auto asumptions others enjoyed it! I found out I was wrong in Middle school but I got a few friends into it and met someone else who was already a fan.. It carried over into high school and now I'm in college and still a massive anime fan hehe.. Though I never would speak of Anime with a girl I was trying to date haha.. but one time when my old GirlFriend came by to watch a movie with me she saw my shelf full of anime sets and said "Hey why dident you tell me, I love this stuff" so hey You can never tell if someone likes Anime (or anything else) untill you bring it up, so be open and be proud

Hey Gecko I am sorry I had a brain fart about your post. Yeah man being military I see it all the time. I am like I am going to watch anime and they are like you get off on that stuff? Which by now I know what they mean but normally I was like, One more time? Yeah your right though the majority of people in the military all think its sex, but I do have the complete first season of Hellsing with me as my guide to show thats its a lot more than that. But its all good.
Hey Sir Wence I was raised in Norton Mass I never even knew of Anime until I got to highschool in RI. Either I was hanging out with the wrong crowd or what. I mean we all played D&D so I figured they would be the ones to get me into it, but I guess I was wrong. So how be good OL' Mass? Oh well you were lucky I was always a jock and a little bit of a dork. I like everything and I have a weird knack for getting along with anybody or anyone I just seem to find one thing in common. Now about the opposite gender I have tried to no sucess to convert one of my girlfriends. But just a heads up if you are showing your G/F anime make sure you don't have it on shuffle and there is porn on the same playlist. (yeah yeah yeah BAKA BAKA BAKA me for that one. Got to learn from your mistakes.) Yeah so anyway keep this topic alive, I am so proud my first post is still being used. |
