No offense to you hard core fans, but it lasts way to long. That is, 42 anime series, OAVs, and movies (counting the various SD series at www.mahq.net) with over 600 eps. Why is it still done? Even the ruler of Westen sci-fi Star Trek knows when to call it quits?

Because it's still immensely popular with a massive, active following of fans, and because they aren't so much continuing the existing story every time as they are more re-inventing it with a new alternate universe every couple years. A new continuity every now & then as opposed to yet another addition to the old one will make things fresher longer.

Not to mention Berman is pushing for another movie (probably f*cking Voyager).
Paramount, for the time being, is sick of spending the high cost per episode only to get bitched at by a fanbase that's 100% fed up with Berman and Braga. It's sad, too, since when Berman "left" the Enterprise, the writers gained control and began to steer the series towards Roddenberry's canon, integrating it with Star Trek's continuity, history, mythos, and even sense of humor (Brent Spiner's Dr. Soong, for instance) giving it truly enjoyable status. So long as there are competent writers with new ideas that can still function within a set canon, a franchise can exist for ages upon ages. Gundam doubly so as the canon gets "re-envisioned" every so often. |

The next Star Trek movie, from what I understand, will take place in a time period closer to Enterprise's, but it will not be Enterprise. It will be a totally original one. I think that's why it hasn't gotten the green light yet, in all honesty.
As for Gundam, Craeyst Raygal is right. Competent writers and new ideas will definitely keep the franchise up and running, not to mention retreading old ground for new audiences -- like Seed's being based off of the original's plotline and Z Gundam's re-release in theatrical form. We haven't really talked about the lasting power of any series in Japan, though. Sentai series by the same company have lasted for years on end, same for shows like Ultraman and Kamen Rider. It may simply be the name that carries these things, but I don't know. By the way, just finished Turn-A Gundam. If any Gundam series could be continued years later, it's this one. I think it was specifically left slightly open-ended, too... |

Like Doremon, and Pokemon, if it's popular it'll keep going.

well, i've seem some gundam series, not all but at least enough to be able to make the following conclusion.
It has come to my attention that in most of the series spoiler[it is always an unexperienced teenager that gets to fight with the gundam.] This is realy starting to annoy me, can't they come up with something more original ![]() |

Kamille, Judau, Heero & Garrod weren't "inexperienced" with Mobile Suits by any means...
And Domon Kasshu certainly isn't a teenager. |
