I've wondered this myself at times while reading/watching the series. The two act more like a couple at times than a lot of characters who are officially together in some series so you really have to wonder... 
But yeah Black Lagoon is tons of fun, though I think of it more of what would happen if an action blockbuster was serialized into something ongoing, but "international manga" also suits it pretty well. I love the amount of crazy references the series throws in, though I'd always heard things about the Viz release of the manga having taken some of that stuff out. Guess I was mistaken(really do need to get around to buying the manga). Black Lagoon is also strange to me in a sense that I think it's quite literally the only thing I've ever read/watched in which I never at any point found myself wondering how it would end. The series is just such a crazy ride that I think even the worst ending (though probably unlikely) wouldn't be able to ruin how fun the rest of the series is. Wish we could get more of the anime though but since I heard Blood Trail had an original ending, I guess it's unlikely. |

When talking to someone looking for new books to read, I compared Black Lagoon to the works of Garth Ennis back in his heyday. Tons of violence, slick movie references and completely batshit insane supporting characters.

I think I'll pass on "Black Lagoon." The whole thing is a bit too much for me,and trust me,I've read some pretty violent manga in my time. I wouldn't be surprised if Quentin Tarantino decided to make a film based on this manga. And,I also wouldn't be surprised if Rei Hiroe would feel honored. In many ways,"Black Lagoon" is a manga version of one of his films.

I've only seen the anime of this, and read a little of the manga, but boy was it a ride. As noted, the relationship between Revy and Rock is one of the more interesting ones I've run into in anime or manga. I think what sold me on them was when Rock finally stood up for himself and earned her respect, at which point instead of kissing and making up she leans her head over to his and lights his cigarette for him using hers. It was such a perfect scene, certainly something you wouldn't see anywhere else.
As for the language, well, it sure was something. I think this video probably says all you need to know about it

Actually when I first saw the series I immediately related it with something insane that Tarantino would make. Boats flying into helicopters, scary maid ripping doors off of cars, women just beating the crap out of each other and bullets flying a mile a minute. Yep, it's definitely over the top. Mind you I'm not much into action films but sometimes I do enjoy a little hyperbole in my films as long as it's done right. Let's not forget Yasuomi Umetsu was also good at this type of visual insanity with 'Kite', 'Mezzo Forte' and Mezzo DSA. The books are well drawn thanks to Hiroe. And yeah, his woman are freaking scary. If notice something about the show and the manga it's got a high ranking of female characters that just blow sh*t up. Again it does make them one dimensional if that's all you see. But the one thing that Hiroe does it somehow put a little back story to his characters to kind of flesh them out but unfortunately there are still huge holes. You don't really know much behind Revy, or Balalaika other than her connection to the Russo/Afghan War. All of them has this look of death, truly dead creatures inside. But somehow you get just a glimmer that they are flesh and blood and their fates can change. But not for the better. Better means you end up dead. The whole thing with Revy actually trying to protect Rock by going against Balalaika. The one person you don't even question about ANYTHING. That was a test. If this had been old Revy she might not have cared. I like you but you piss me off. You want to talk about p*ssing your pants? That scared the crap out of me and that was a damn fantasy. |

I'm a total sucker for Black Lagoon and its a surprise that it got an article. I too also wondered if Revy and Rock will ever get together, those two seem pretty close.

Strange that you didn't mention that Rei Hiroe actually did a doujinshi where he imagined Black Lagoon as a live-action American TV series (it depicts Revy as an actress from Hong Kong who move to America, Rock as a Japanese-American who learns Japanese afterwards, Balalaika's actress using special makeup for her burn mark, etc).

Calling Black Lagoon an "international" manga is the best possible descriptor I can think of for it. I remember watching the anime and thinking to myself, "This is the LEAST Japanese show I have ever watched". It really felt like some kind of western work.

Ah, yes. Black Lagoon. One of the few shows you get to hear Light Yagami clash with Gilda the Griffon. Those Canadians sure outdid themselves with that dub.

I just want more anime tbh. They made a short S3 as a single arc, but I would love for them to make a legit next season with 13 eps etc
