For Christmas, I bought some of the last few Stratos 4 DVDs from Amazon and some other places. I only opened the 3rd volume over the weekend, and saw he claw hub was damaged and the DVD had shifted and gotten scratched. I went through Amazon's returns policy, finding a nearby UPS drop-off store. It was closed on Sunday, the 30th, but Amazon stated the returns window "went through January 31st." "Thank goodness," I thought. "That was close. I'll return it tomorrow after work."
Then I checked my order today and it said the "Return Window expired on January 31st." Ehhhh...well, lucky for them, now they'll be getting more business as I have to buy the same item over again.
This has taught me an important lesson though: Always open DVDs/BDs as soon as you get them, not when you actually watch them. Especially old ones.

Are you sure you are too late? Does the return window expire at 12:00 am on Jan. 31st or at some other time (like 11:59 pm, for example)? Also, just out of curiosity how long is the window open?

This. It's been my experience that anime DVDs are more likely to be damaged than bigger titles (cheaper, lower quality replicators, maybe?), so I always check discs as soon as I get them. Multi-disc sets are the worst, since even if there's a problem with only one disc (that I didn't/couldn't see) I have to return the whole set.
And, yeah, you might email customer service just in case. Seems like sometimes, the return date isn't so much a hard deadline as a, "we reserve the right to not exchange the item past date X," precaution.

And, don't just check for scratches, actually pop the disc and make sure it plays. I got the Bourne blu-ray box set and despite not having any physical damage and no problems with the other two films, Supremacy simply wouldn't load.

Try emailing them. I had a DVD from them not work a while back. It had taken me a couple months to get around to watching it so I was way over the deadline. I just explained it to them and they still sent me a replacement.
