I don't get it, first the staff posts to say they are confused that another anime is parodying theirs and then they apologize for feeling that way? That seems weirder than the whole parody thing actually...

Is there something specific about this parody that's causing friction? The whole situation seems pretty weird.

Sounds like somebody is a little sensy (drunk?). I haven't seen the parody in question, but I'd be willing to bet it is probably affectionate in nature as opposed to mean-spirited. Lighten up, dude!

People had been comparing Ika Musume to Index pretty much since the Ika Musume anime came about, so to have the Index staff parody it shouldn't really be a shocker. I haven't seen the extra in question, but I kinda doubt it was done in a mean spirited sort of way, so he should have just had a chuckle and felt good that he made a product worthy of parody.

Really? I have seen and love both shows, but I'm hard pressed to see any points of comparison, beyond that fact that both Squid Girl and Index are cute-geso. |

I was more referring to the characters of Ika Musume and Index, not their respective shows. They look slightly similar to each other, but that's about it. Perhaps it's just more people seeing what they want to see. As for me actually comparing the two, I don't see the need to compare them, other than as you said they're both really cute.

Ah. Actually, now that you mention it, I can sort of see the visual similarity between the two characters. Funny I never really noticed it before. That probably explains the Index-tan parody of Squid Girl in the first place.

I really hope that last sentence is an idiom that just doesn't translate into English, because I hope he eats every night, and not just when he needs to calm himself =\
But yeah, I've seen all the Index/Ika pics on Pixiv, it's a pretty popular thing right now. |

I believe the problem of the friction between the fans is that the Index-tan bit directly references many niconico douga MADs such as this MAD. Thus while you have JC Staff having fun, at the same time, they are technically officially making and selling an unauthorized parody, and at the same time you have them acknowledging fan works that they watch online. Then you have pony canyon claiming they aren't too happy with it which creates friction.

BTW, if your wondering about the parody, here's a blog detailing about Index-tan episode 3.
Please note, due to the blogger's very cynical views, do not take his words about this episode seriously. http://blog.seiha.org/2011/01/a-certain-magical-index-tan-03-gesoooooooo/ |

This sounds like a case of Japanese people being overly butthurt over nothing and overly apologetic over nothing.

To be fair if I made an anime, I wouldn't want it to show up in a god awful anime like Index either.

Technically, a parody falls under the Fair Use clause of the Copyright Laws, so authorization is unnecessary although descriptive. But Japan's Copyright Laws do not have a Fair Use clause... yet. |

I doubt the content of the parody concerned them. However, with the Japanese, it seems that they expect to be notified as a show of courtesy. This can be true even among people within the same company; while there are obviously no legal barriers, it's a cultural expectation that you ask for permission (in the game industry, people have gotten extremely pissed when others in the same company reused their code or characters without talking to them). Some people associated with the Ika Musume project may have felt slighted that Geneon never asked beforehand. In this case, it was a Pony Canyon producer who publicly voiced his complaint and not a member of the creative staff. |
