I was just on Anime Nation News and they had one of there ask john questions, and the question was why are all cosplayers so Ugly? this is not a shock to me because most of them are. But there are some out there that aren't but are looks everything? I thought cosplaying was just for the fun of it and dressing up with fans of the shows you love to have a good time and not care. I guess Anime Fans are getting really picky and out of order, in which they want cosplaying people who like the girls at car shows modeling in nothing but a string. What do you think about this and do you think they should restrict ugly cosplayers from Conventions?

Restrict ugly cosplayers from conventions? It's just about being silly and having a good time. Some are TRYING to be ugly, like those old guys who wear a sailor moon fuku. And not ALL cosplayers are ugly. If you -really- pull it off, you can look just as hot as your anime character counterpart.

Whoever asked John that should really be beaten. True, there are some that are a bit painful on the eyes, but it shouldn't matter. Cosplayers cosplay for the fun of dressing up, making their own costume, and being someone else. As a cosplayer, I realize that most of the fun is in making that costume, and being proud of yourself for finishing it, and then for a day or so, being able to be someone else. However, there will always be people who make fun of cosplayers. That's mean, but really, it's to be expected, because that's just how society is. If people are going to make fun of ugly people and fat people IRL, why would it be different from fandom? And, like Mr. Oppliger said, a lot of anime fans *are* traditionally those that are on the fringers of society. It's really no secret, or even stereotype, that a big chunk of anime fans are of the more nerdier, geekier, ... not so hot persuasion. Actually, I think John had a great response to the question. Honestly though, some of the *meanest* people you will find are in the cosplaying community. They're a very small minority, but they're a very loud minortiy, and those are the cosplay elitists. Those are the pretty girls and boys who will trash anyone who doesn't have the face or the figure, or the perfectly tailored clothes. (Though the vast majority of cosplayers are incredibly kind and generous people, and many of them are good-looking too, so it's not just ego that turns them sour.) These are the people who cosplay for the sole purpose of getting attention, and they really damper the spirit of things. I'd much rather see a fat or ugly (or both!) cosplayer who has put a lot of heart and pride into their costume than a good-looking person who is going to put down other people. I think anyone brave enough to wear a costume in public deserves the same chance as anyone else. (Mind you, I'm not innocent from making fun of a few people here and there, but saying that all cosplayers are ugly, or that ugly cosplayers should be banned is base and dreadful.) |

SakeChanBD about the making of the costumes it's true, I saw a girl on TV where she and a bunch of friends where cosplayers and she and her friends spend a long time making sailor moon costumes and she said"I don't care what people think I know I put alot into this and I'm proud" I think thats part of what Cosplaying is all about for the ones who cosplay. However for the side of the viewer like myself, I don't go to conventions and I don't cosplay but I've seen many in Magazines and I to tell you the turth that even if the person is ugly, Fat ,skinny, pale, messed up teeth, short and in a wheel chair I don't care I just look at the costumes and if the costume is done well and who is right on target with the other self thats how I do it. But this person is looking at there faces and bodies to make his decision on them, I think its not fare and its mean.

Ideally, that would be true... ... but damn, there are so many cosplayers who are fat and ugly (and perhaps not even of the right gender) try to make themselves hot and dress in an insanely skimpy outfit from an anime they haven't seen before. I don't know why they do that. Still, I applaud those that cosplay for fun, although that seems to be out nowadays... since it's all about "who had the costume first" or "who cares about anime, i chose the costume because it looks cool." Oh well. |

Yes, there are some who dress in skimpy outfits when perhaps, how do I say it, it might not be the best idea, but those are in the extreme minority. (Some of them do it to get more attention, much like Bamboo's example above) Also, those that do dress in skimpy outfits, do not do so to "make themselves hot", since showing skin has nothing to do with whether a person is hot or not.
Cosplay is still very much for fun, it's once again the minority that takes things to the extreme, but the minority gets all of the attention. |

Everyone got good opinon and all and cosplayer are out to have fun. But when I see a cosplayer, I'm looking to see if they look similar to thier anime-counterpart, not just the costume but how they look in it. A lot of times I would have to say no...I'm sorry but a fat Faye Valentime (with too much make-up) might put a lot of her heart into her skimpy costume, but she's no faye by any measure of the imagination. It's kind of mean, but I'm just being truthful and if you're geeky and ugly yourself than you probably can't judge others and call 'em ugly.
Most guys who cosplay as Alucard are pretty decent since you don't haven't to be a pretty boy to look like alucard. And it's true that most hot girls who cosplay are more attractive the the eyes of geeky male anime viewer. I seen a lot of japanese cosplayer that look really like thier anime-counterpart. What's even more weird is some of the girls who cosplay as male character (cloud) actually look like those male character. Actually, I don't like cosplaying a character that I'm not physically similar. This means, I'm not going to dress like a fat or a short anime character. Right now I am planning a Keiki's cosplay, and, heck, I might not have his loooong wig (something in sale), or have such a white skin (something easily solved with a little of make-up). But it's probably because I CAN be similar to him.
Therefore, I know how hard cosplay can be, and I respect those who have put a lot of work into it. I won't criticaze a cosplayer that has made the clothes of the character he/she likes, but doesn't look like him/her just because something that probably you can't change. I would be angry if they'd easily won the contests, but it doesn't happen OT: Today I went to buy the cloth, but...It costed 10.75 € (a little more than 14 US $)...Each metre! C'mon! |

Agreed in so far as I personally look to see how the cosplayer matches up to the character. However, this nonsense about 'restricting ugly cosplay' from conventions is ridiculous, just like there is good fashion and bad fashion, there will be people who look good in cosplay and those who look....not as good. If they are fine with that, so be it. |

I agree with what Bamboo said, because for a guy, it took guts for me to do Excel Excel two years ago. |

While I would like to see some more "hot" people dressing up and looking cool in anime costumes I dont see why "ugly and fat" people cant. It is as mentioned above about having fun and showing others your costume that you worked hard on. I think SakeChanBD puts it best. My only problem is I feel that certain people should not wear certain things such as skimpy outfits when they know it doesnt look good on them at all. I know it doesnt happen too often but really. But just have fun and enjoy cosplaying just make sure not to become a rabid addict.

I'll be faithfully honest, I think the vast majority of AMERICAN Cosplayers should be beaten with Haruka's Guitar and shot with the gatling guns of a Gundam. I can't even begin to tell the atrocities i've seen.
I have no idea why some people, whom are so entranced by a particular character, would pretty much make a half-hearted attempt to cosplay that character. For example, out of all the Lulu's from FFX and FFX-2 that i've seen, maybe 3 i'd say as "acceptable" and 2 that were "accurate." The rest were either hastily made a/or poorly thought out. Here is one that is almost dead-accurate: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/phantomskyline/lulu4.jpg To me, i'd rather have a faithful and near accurate representation of a character than some half-assed attempt at being such a character (thought I'd give extra credit to Sailor Bubba, Man-Faye, and that one fat guy dressed up as Sakura from Naruto for poking fun. Thought i'd spare you the images, especially Man-Faye. *shudder*) I remember that character that way, I will naturally be revolted when some Chubby Girl decides to stuff herself into a costume and try to pass as that character. Or some Guy tries to pass as Kid Buu with a Dildo on his head. Yeah, I said Dildo; but due to TOS, I can't post it. |
