I couldn't find any threads about this topic and the one I did find was about a different matter... the one I found is about a anime studio. I just want people opinion on the cost to start up a anime company like funimation and bandai entertainment. I was thinking of doing this for a class project in buisness and I could not find any info about this matter and I dont think Bandai or funimation will tell me how much it cost to bring an anime to the US and how to get it on air etc...

Well sadly not much information is really known about the financial side of anime. Companies in this industry are very secretive about their budgets and contracts so it's hard to put a number on any of this. But every estimate that I've heard is that licensing alone will run companies hundreds of thousands of dollars. And then that's not even including the dubing cost and cost for just keeping facilities up. Then it would easily run thousands on distribution. The anime business is a hard one to get into to, and it's even harder to find solid information on it.
Also it seems like it's becoming increasingly difficult for new companies to get into the business. Allot of the existing companies are either American branches of Japanese companies or they have been around for years and have already established allot of ties in the industry. It's becoming popular for companies to get contracts with Japanese producers to get first pick of all the titles they put out. Which means that smaller companies have to basically pick through what's left of the throw aways.

It costs roughly $8 an episode to dub and sub plus the rights to the show itself will set you back maybe $50 so yeah quite alot.
[EDIT: Okay, you're just entirely making numbers up here. Blatant trolling like this will not be tolerated. - Key]

Where dose Gentry get his numbers?
I would think that with all the costs of getting a something to the states that it would be hard to get some things!

Well if i was an anime production studio and i made say a 26ep anime with good music, graphics, voice acting. it would cost me like maybe $250,000(USD) per episode (info from Coyboy Bebop encyclopedia). Or if it was on going, the expenses from company taxes, salary, utilties, equipment/supplies (PC with super CPU/film), keeping fans happy by pumping out ideas every week. Well its alot of work and since my income is mainly from production royalties like lisencing/ DVD or Toy Sales (small % btw if DVDs are $30ea). No wonder its tough being an anime production studio.
Well if the cost to produce is so high then its obvious that cost to lisence will be even higher since studios need to make money ontop of their expenses. so 250K x 26/on going = at least $7 million.
well i could also be very wrong since this is only a idea and i myself have no clue at all...

Cowboy Bebop was licensed a while ago, so prizes could change since then.
Also series aren't bought like material thing- license describes how the rights can be used- how many times aired in TV, possibility of DVD release, what kind of merchandise can be sold etc.

that's something I've always wanted to venture in myself. I can't imagine companies such as Central Park Media Tokyopop or Right Stuf having huge budgets when they started out so I believe there is room for the little guy. You just can't expect to acquire the big name titles but with a little bit of digging I bet there's a slew of older series & ovas that one can get hold of for a reasonable price. This is somewhat unrelated but I recall a couple of months ago a fan was able to acquire licenses for anime songs to make a cover album and it wasn't as difficult as everybody tries to make it out to be. Hell some companies don't even dub anymore

Another things that's important to keep in mind is that licensing fees are not set in stone, they will change depending on the show. These price changes are usually determined by how big of a hit the anime is. For example: Neon Genesis Evangelion was most likely one of the most expensive based purely on just how well it has done in Japan and around the world. In fact, from what I've heard, this is actually why ADV was only able to license the series and not the movie. It's rumored that the Japanese rights holders were convinced that the licensing fee for the movie should be outrageously huge because they knew that it was a big hit in Japan. But they were asking for a price that ADV couldn't afford to pay.
