Wow, Nogami is running to the press every five minutes isn't he?

I realize this is just a retweet blog post, but would it have hurt to name the editor of Champion Red and investigate who contacted Kawasaki from Tokyo/TAF in regards to the award? This information should have been included.

I realize that the current crusade is against Tokyo's Bill 156, but did you need to bury the actual story in four more paragraphs about how its the end of the anime/manga world? It seems like every other news post here copy and pastes that into their blogpost.

I'm willing to bet there are at least 50 comic anthologies dedicated to the subject.

I will not deny the enduring fame or massive success of Touch or Mitsuru Adachi overall, but at the same time Star of the Giants aka Kyojin no Hoshi is THE definitive baseball anime/manga. I mean that literally; it more or less set the template for the entire "sports" genre, and preceded Touch by a good 15 years. There is little doubt in my mind that it had a significant effect on Mitsuru Adachi as an artist and storyteller. Of course, in sharp contrast to Adachi's work I don't believe that much (if any) of Star of the Giants has ever been translated into English on account that it's so darned old (note the article mentioning the 45th anniversary). That and it's several hundred episodes long. So it's understandably overlooked here; I myself know relatively little about it.

Unknown that he may be to us English-speaking anime fans, Noboru Kawasaki is a freaking titan of manga. Most people in Japan don't watch anime, but there is a good chance that many middle-aged people and the elderly would fondly remember Star of the Giants from their childhood. It's one of those things that "everybody" watched/read at the time. As such, news of a guy like this refusing an award due to his opposition the amendment would potentially be more beneficial to changing public opinion on the measure than the multitude of other big names speaking out in protest...Mitsuru Adachi included.

So the guy refuses. Just give it to the runner up instead.

Personally I would have taken the award and said on stage and to the press that I was offended over this new Bill and was reluctant to take the award because of it. (But I would have kept the award!) Laughing

Just kidding. I support you Kawasaki! Great move. I hope other companies and people follow suit. That Bill is a joke! Rolling Eyes

Pretty sure if Noboru Kawasaki refuses it, it means nothing anymore, just like AWO above stated

Note that there is a risk there ~ suppose you give it to the runner-up, and ~ out of respect for Noboru Kawasaki, for example ~ they turn it down as well?

Oops.

Respect has nothing to do with it. The guy made his decision. No one else should be bound by him. The next person could always accept the award and make a speech against the bill, accept it on another day.

I applaud Kawasaki for standing up to the powers that be. I think he has more balls than most artists in this country. I mean, when was the last time you heard of an actor turning down an Oscar based on his/her stance on issues? The last time I remember something happening like this may have been when Marlon Brando refused his Oscar in 1973 for The Godfather.

Kyojin no Hoshi is about Baseball, TOUCH IS ABOUT LIFE ITSELF.

Adachi manga can barely be classified as "sports" manga... Adachi even admits it himself.

Example) (Aoba from Cross Game receives a copy of an Adachi baseball manga...)
Aoba: "This manga isn't even about baseball!"
Aoba: "I knew I should have asked for Major or something..."

More questions: What award did he reject? Its certainly not the Tokyo Anime Award since those go to a recent title, not classic manga.

There does not seem to be an award given to classic titles at the TAF, so this information is rather pertinent to the story.

Thanks for the thanks, btw.

I'm still waiting for some clarification on who the mystery callers to Kawasaki were and why such hearsay is being reported at face value with such a lack of the basic facts of the story being revealed.

I just thought about it, but it'd be hilarious to see Anime Contents Expo offer him an award instead. Man, they really should do that.
