Because there is no news about this on the site Sad Mad, I will put it here.

When I say 'popular', I don't mean it in the sense of sales, although that is surely one aspect of the whole picture. 'Popular' in the sense of 'recognized'.

Japanese manga-guide Kono manga ga sugoi! at the end of each year publishes a list of the best manga in public opinion - asking not random people from the street, but celebrities, magazine editors, people from bookstores, manga-clubs and so on. There are two categories: men's (shonen and seinen) and women's (shojo and josei). The both lists' top 10:

- for men
1. Shingeki no kyojin - Hajime Isayama
2. Thermae Romae - Mari Yamazaki
3. Sayonara mo iwazu ni - Kentaro Ueno
4. One Piece - Eiichiro Oda
5. Hagane no renkinjutsushi (Fullmetal Alchemist) - Hiromu Arakawa
6. Otoyome gatari - Kaoru Mori
7. Drifters - Kouta Hirano
8. Bakuman - Tsugumi Oba/Takeshi Obata
9. I am a Hero - Kengo Hanazawa
10. Aku no hana (Flowers of Evil) - Shuzo Oshimi

- for women
1. Her - Tomoko Yamashita
2. Don't Cry, Girl - Tomoko Yamashita
3. Kuragehime (Princess Jellyfish) - Akiko Higashimura
4. Chihayafuru - Yuki Suetsugu
4. Natsuyuki rendezvous - Haruka Kawachi (shares the 4th place)
6. Ooku - Fumi Yoshinaga
7. Utsubora - Asumiko Nakamura (I'm not sure if this is the correct transcription of the name)
8. Kiyoku yawaku - Ryo Ikuemi
9. Kimi ni todoke - Karuho Shina
10. Machi de uwasa no tengu no ko - Nao Iwamoto

The greatest story of manga publishing in 2010. (although the year is not officially over yet) is the story of Shingeki no kyojin (The Attack of the Giants).

I hope that this will boost curiosity for some of these titles.

Smile
