Running up to the interview, they bring up some excellent points I've rarely seen covered about the manga/anime industry, namely the stagnance that's mirrored in other parts of Japanese socieity brought about by their cultural isolation. It makes you realize just how big and rare titles like March Story, Black God and Peepo Choo are when you consider their artists are foreigners. The point that in the rest of the world, foreign comics are pretty widely published and it's very common to see non-American artists working for publishers here- artists from Canada [Darwyn Cooke, Svetlana Chmakova], Japan [GuriHiru!], Korea, Spain [Salvador Larocca!], across South America, the Phillipines [Lenil Yu! Phillip Tan! Tintin Pantoja!], France ]too many to list], Britain, Australia [Queenie Chan], and other places of the world are regularly published with absolutely no fuss. Marvel's set up a portfolio review at a Singapore comic festival, and it's just business as usual for them. The isolation of comics in Japan [and the way manga fandom outside Japan often views Manga as solidly japanese work] is a strange thing to think of when you consider how international comics are everywherelse. Anyhoo, go read it! Fascinating stuff, and an insider perspective from Felipe. And comments from his agent/translator Yukari Shiina and Stuart Levy (as nutty as some of the DJ Milky stuff may seem, Stu's commentary is always interesting and knowledgeable to me. Interesting to see his viewpoints in the article too) |
